importing .dbx files to new outlook account

I reinstalled xp on someone's system and now im restoring their outlook account.

Before I formatted, I went and got all the .dbx files from the outlook dir within the /../../documents and settings/../../ tree.. And now I dont know exactly what to do do get them back to where they are openable in the outlook express.

I cant just put them back in the folder they came from, cause its not there. How do I import dbx files or change them to eml?

Open Outlook.

File ---> Import and Export

Go from there.

I did that and it wont import .dbx files.

You could try putting them in the relevant folder, but that didn't work when I tried it the first time.

The only way I have found to do this 100% successfully is to use a third party proggy to do it:
outlook backup restore
123 outlook express backup
OEbackup
etc etc.

I've never seen a post on this in all my weeks on Anandtech that suggested using a third party backup yoot for Outlook/express!

File/Import/Messages/Select Microsoft Outlook Express 6/Import Mail from an OE6 Identity/Select Main Identity/click Next ...and the path will be revealed to you ...copy it.

It's a hidden folder unless he enables Show hidden files and folders. He'll see the path, but will never find it in Explorer.

From within OE, Tools>Options>Maintenance>Store Folder will show the path also.

I usually copy and paste the path in the Run box.

Once you can see the folder by whatever means, you should be able to copy those files and be good.
