Important technologies in next 6 mo?

I'm planning to build sometime in the next six months, just wondering what are the most important technological developments for personal computing that are coming that I need to pay attention to? I'm thinking, in no order
Windows Vista - could actually be worth upgrading
Conroe- looks like intel might beat amd in bang/buck if not top performance
Blu-ray - Probably too expensive to buy but definitely big in 2007

What are you top technologies?

-New AMD Socket (AM2 I think its called)
-Dx10 Video Cards
-True HDMI video cards
-Next-Gen video cards (G80?)

I think some of these are more than 6 months away, but prolly before end of year. Oh, and I heard Vista was delayed to 2007 (after they said November).

The next big thing will be DDR3, early JEDC white papers show DDR3 running lower latencies at higher frequencies. One engineer was quoted at one point saying "DDR2 was a rush job, it could have been better". DDR3 is going to fix and address many of DDR2's short comings. For those who will try to tell me DDR3 is nothing new, you are wrong. GDDR3 is way differant than DDR3.

Long term, I hope they can set some standards for desktop display resoltuion. Preferably a Minimum of 1920x1080 and then design all graphics hardware around that spec with decent performance on the low end stuff.

PhysX

Vista is delayed to jan 2007, and with that DX10 cards are first useful there as you need Vista for DX10

HDCP support if you're planning to watch HD media.

It's not important for the next 6 months but for components that aren't upgraded as often such as monitors it's essential futureproofing.

well seeing as HD players probably wont take off for years if ever i wouldnt worry too much abouth hdmi/hdcp etc. i mean if you are already buying a monitor and it happens to be a feature get it, but i wouldnt pay extra.

blue ray on a computer probably wont matter, same with hd-dvd.

vista wont be out in 6 months either.

so in 6 months, i'd say conroe, am2, and thats about it. there is no ddr3 until 2008 or maybe very late 2007 really on the desktop.

dedicated physics chips though a cool idea probably will not take off. i'd figure they will be integrated into graphics cards eventually , i mean the voodoo2/voodoo1 had its 2 years too, but something for such a small niche (and physics is a much smaller niche than even 3d was back then) probably will die.

Have you heard on when DDR3 might start appearing? I wish AMD could have held out long enough to skip DDR2.

I agree. The last rumor was DDR3 should appear in 2007. I believe the spec is finalized since Samsung and others have produced a few chips but have not marketed or sold them yet.

The the JEDEC spec for DDR2 called for memory controllers to operated and maintain reverse compatabilty with DDR1. But as far as I know AMD elected not to do this with socket M2; and I think it is a shame. Ask me and I will email you the JEDEC PDF Spec Sheets.

Not going to happen with the res thing. Everyone would have to upgrade their LCD's and LCDS with that high of a res will cost major $.

Die Interpoation!

It is a long term goal that I would like to see happen. Prices will continue to drop and newer technologies will continue to develop in time this will be something that is very feasable. Untill then long live the CRT.
