Importance of retaining bracket for Slot 1 CPU's?

Here's the scenario: my wife's P2B-LS based PC needed a much overdue speed bump, and I'd read about other folks having success with a slocket/Coppermine running at 1.8V. I purchased a S370-DL and a Coppermine CPU (P3 800/cC0) and installed them this evening.

I had to remove the retaining bracket and attachments from the slot's former owner (a P2 400), as the fins on the slocket didn't fit in the "arms" of the bracket, so I am left with a free standing slocket with no retaining bracket.

How big of a deal is this? Does the bracket serve any purpose beyond stabilizing the CPU?

Contact the place where you bought the CPU or slocket and see if they can send you a set of universal brackets or retainers. Or try a PC retailer or repair shop where they may have them. If in your case the mobo is horizontal and the slocket vertical (i.e., a desktop rather than a tower type case), then it might not be too bad that way until you can get a bracket.

No, it does not serve any purpose aside from keeping the CPU in place (as far as I know). I'm using either one for my setup. Not saying that this is a great idea, but the PIIs I have fit pretty snug. Just try not to throw the comp around (though honestly I have more problems with AGP cards getting unseated).
