Importance of pwr supply?

Some dude at a local comp shop suggested that 4.97V is the minimum that should be supplied by the PS, otherwise the mobo is at risk of deterioration or something. My mobo had crashed and took the CPU with it. When I got the mobo back on warranty, I checked the bios voltage display; it showed 4.88V on average. I'm running an MSI 6330 (the original pro), Duron800, GeForce2 pro, a bunch of peripherals and 4 IDE devices. I don't really want to experience this again. The PS was listed as a recommended one on AMD's site. What gives? Does any one know about or have experience with this issue?

Depends what you're checking with. Most basic multimeters (I'm assuming you're using one of these) have pretty poor tolerances. I prefer using a Fluke which is probably one of the best for testing!

If you're using software to test, then it's probably gonna be even worse. You might see +/-10% fluctuations. I wouldn't worry too much about it tho. If its a good PSU 300W or more, than you're probably good. I havent' dealt with anyhting like that before. I even used a 250W for my Duron 750. I have 2 nics, PCTV card, SbLive, and AGP card, burner, cdrom, 2 HDs, 4 fans.

I checked the voltage stats in bios. The display did not indicate much of a fluctuation from 4.88V. Variance on what was displayed was +-0.01V. But I didn't consider that the bios measurements might be inaccurate. Perhaps I finally have a use for my multimeter;) If indeed the voltage remains around 4.88 upon measurement via multimeter, do you know if that is a deleterious for the motherboard? Any info on this particular point would be appreciated.
