Importance of a case

hey guys, im a little strapped for cash and I was wondering how important it is to get a "brand name" case in regards to oc and performance. Is there much difference in getting a generic "Mid Tower Case" from Fry's as opposed to getting a Tsunami Thermaltake, etc? Thanks in advanced!
 
Always get one with enough cooling. 120 mm intake, 120 mm exhaust. 80mm exhaust would be good as well if it's near the vid card area. Fans on top of the case are no longer featured for the most part since they create too much noise.
 
The brand of case is completely unimportant. However, the amount of cooling the case provides IS extremely important. Try and get a case that has at least one 120 mm fan blowing air in the front and one 120 mm fan blowing air out the back.

DO NOT get a case that comes with a power supply because almost to a model, the power supplies provided with cases are better suited for door stops than powering your PC.

And yes, that Chenbro is a steal at that price - it isn't your generic junk. As you'll find out when you calc shipping - she's not a lightweight. The reason they are still languishing there is that their looks aren't everyone's cuppa...

save up like $50 and add it to the money you're gonna use to buy a case... then, go buy the lian li v1000. best case i've ever owned. i just switched from the thermaltake tsunami (got SOOO sick of that damn case)...

Thanks for the welcome! I have another question though, how about this PSU? It looks pretty good (I think) and it's quiet. Oh and thanks to everyone who's replied, the feedback here is great!
 
anyone know if cooler master, in general, is a good brand for PSUs. In particular, the one given in the link in the above post (the cooler master extreme 430W)?
 
One of the new Fortron/Sparkle in that range would do you better. The CM/Real Power PSUs aren't considered that good. ewiz.com was blowing out some Enhance units that they snagged cheap. If they have one that suits you, it would also be better.

CoolerMaster is decent but you could go with this Seasonic and have one of the best.

Nice find on that case btw :thumbsup:!
 
Hey guys! Thanks for all of your help, but I think I'm going to stick with the cooler master (because I have to buy 3 in total for my brothers and I, hehe). Once again, thanks for your time and genuine opinions on this matter! 🙂

If price is an issue see if you can find a equivalent Forton-Source, it shouldn't be very tough and you'll be getting a better (perhaps significantly) PSU.
 
If you want to avoid the added cost of a good PSU and you're on a budget, go w/ an Antec case like the SLK3000B Galvanized mentioned (there's also the slk2650BQE which I have). From all I've read, the PSU quality on these cases is worth the cost of the case alone. The fact that the cases are pretty good too is just gravy.
 
Investing in a good case is a good idea, because things like cases (also keyboards, desks, and chairs) are more likely to last a longer time than the components they house, not so much concerning longevity, but upgrade cycle time. One good case can house several generations of components over its lifetime.

I placed an order on one of those only to be told they were sold out :|

Meh.

They said they'll get more in May. [Said it was ~2-3 weeks backordered. Though I doubt it.]

Check out this powersupply.

Should serve you well, provided those specs are current.

Never cheap out on a case. I almost bought a $40 case + PSU for my new rig until seeing people mention the genius behind entrusting $1000 worth of parts to a $20 no name PSU. Even then, I only got an Antec SLK1650 for $80 which is a nice case, but really cramped (note to self: learn to read dimensions and define mini). Anyways, other than a quality PSU, a case that's been well designed for 'use' and spaciousness is really worth it.

Like others said, if you want a budget quality case, Antec SLK1650 or 2650 models are good, but really cramped inside. Their 350W Smartpower is pretty nice and quiet, but lacking on the 12v rails. Personally, I'd go with the 2650 though due to the extra features and the door on the front. I originally didn't see the need for it, but 1 screwy RMA later, I now have an ass of a front bezel. ~Contacted optical drive company, took 1 month for them to ask for an address and them to ship the bezel. Now one month later, where the f*ck is my bezel!~
