Import songs into iTunes without copying to local drive?

I would like to load my MP3 library into iTunes on my mac, over the network. The MP3's are many and located on my server, I don't want to fill up the mac by copying them all over. Is this possible?
 
there's a setting for this in the preferences on the advanced tab. uncheck 'copy files to itunes music folder when adding to library'.
