Implications of mobo 'losing' HD...?

Hi guys. A colleague has an old computer, and recently, the motherboard has been not been automatically detecting the hard drive about once a week or so. U can easily go into the bios, and 'detect' the hard drive, and the system will boot up fine for a week or so, but then loses it again.

I was just wondering what exactly this could possibly imply in the long term. Is the HD going?....mobo going?.....semi lose ide cables inside?

possibly, but the clock seems to keep its time.

Its happened on other computers b4 that ive fixed, and the fix is easy, ive just never really known why it does it!! 🙂
