I've been in the market for a used car, and I saw a guy down the street selling a 1994 Impala SS. I called him up got info on it, etc. I'm just wondering what experiences any of you had with this model car and wether or not you think this would be an ok buy (first car, btw). Heres the info that I got from em:

1994 Impala SS with 9C1 Police Package LT1 Picture
100,000 Miles
No Winters
No Accidents or Flood Damage
Deer hit pass side door, which was replaced and the car was repainted
Owner has all of the original reciepts for the car and the mods
Current owner is the second owner of the car
All mods were professionally installed
It was raced in the 1/4 mile a few times...supposedly did 14 seconds on it
New transmission at 87k Miles

Mods:
Power Pulleys
SLP Headers
Flowmaster H-Pipe Exhaust
9C1 Police Package
160° Thermostat
Oil + Tranny Cooler
K&N Air Filter
Hotchkiss Suspension
MSD Ignition
Hypertech Power Programmer
Aluminum Driveshaft
Ceramic Disc Brakes

He's asking 7500 but says its negotiable

The interior looks brand new, the exterior is excellent(no scratches, dents, rust or anything else noticeable)

Is there anything else I should look/ask for or have checked on it? thanks for the input.

something i'd worry about is taht a car that has been "raced a few times" was probably driven like it was raced a lot more often.. Meaning that the engine has been under a lot of stress in its life.

if it was me, i'd have to pass... that engine can't last much longer.

I'd have to agree.

An Impala SS as your first car? That car could get you into a TON of trouble. They are deceptively quick.

i think 7500 is a great price! you'll probably plunk down a little bit for repairs, but it'll still be cheaper than what most of these are going for. i think similar models in conditions that are only slightly better than this one are going for about twice as much.

you really can't get a big roomy rwd 8-cyl sedan with gobs of american torque on it nowadays :)

i say go for it!!

100,000 miles on a Chevy V8 that has been driven hard is risky. If you can afford the insurance and repairs though, buy it.

regardless of how clean a police interceptor car looks, i'd never buy one, even if it was a fox mustang P.I. They (police) rag on those cars, and after they sell them, the people who buy them rag on them thinking that they are honorably discharged race cars. Cars come and go...find another one, IMO.

Excuse me? Why is that? With proper care, and oil changes, those engines can last well into 200k..

BTW, that's a steal @ $7500

Thanks for the responses so far. I'm probably gonna test drive it, and get it looked at if I get serious about it.

Its not a police car. Its just a regular impala ss, but I guess there was an option when it was bought to get the police package on it.

I can understand you wanting a car with a little bit of balls to it. But this behemoth for your first car is a big mistake. Number one, as you have mentioned, know next to dick about cars. This car will require you to learn fast, since its geared with after market parts by previous owners who knew a little (or just enough) to put these parts on the car. Number two, the gas bill alone will flatten your wallet weekly. And finally number three, as stated previously the car has been raced. Racing a car even if only once a weekend will significantly loosen and put unnecessary strain on a car designed to be a sport luxury vehicle. Frankly this car is a Pig. When it rolled off the line in Detroit it already had two strikes against it. 1) it was a V8 and 2) it was a Chevy. Do yourself a big favor and buy a nice compact car that wont eat you out of house and home gas-wise, and for the same price will allow you some bells and whistles.

7500?!?!??!?! too bad you are all the way across the nation... otherwise i'd buy in a second if it's in the condition you described.. i've been looking for a good affordable impala ss for a looong time..

wait a min.. i just read the thread again.... make sure this is a real impala SS, not a retired cruiser that has been converted to be an impala lookalike. sounds like that's what it is though because of the incredible price... a 94 impala in good condition should fetch about $12k...

My first car was an 97 Caprice. It had a 305, and it sucked gas. That beinf said, I trult learned how to drive in that thing. Winter, snow and light rear wheel drive with plenty of power behind it. I didn't kill myself....

I would take the car, as long as you got some cah put aside for engine repairs. 100K on a GM is getting up there.

Its the real thing...the guy who is selling it currently is the second owner. He has all the original receipts, from when the car was purchased so its the real thing. I'm definetly going to check it out more because it does seem like alot for the money.

I've got a friend that has a 1995 Firebird Formula with many of the same mods, so I can ask him about all that kind of stuff...I've got a general idea of what each one does though.

BTW - carfax would say if it was used in police right?

A carfax report might not say "police," but if it doesn't match the original owner, beware. JMHO :)

Was the entire car repainted because the Impala SS was only produced in three colors Black, Dark Cherry, and Gray-Green. Also the lower side cladding of a true Impala SS is missing in the picture. Does it have imbroidered leather bucket sets with a center console (the interior color should be gray)?

Too many red flags. Red-necky mods indicate car was likely driven very hard. A lot. Repaint indicates probable body damage - you don't repaint an entire car over a dented passenger door. 100k miles is a LOT for a mid-90s American car- especially one that's been raced. The SS was a great car, but you want to buy yours from someone who respected and took care of it.

My buddy has a 9C1 Caprice and that bad boy has almost 200k miles and it still runs strong. He did have to replace the tranny, which is usually the first thing to go on a PI. The nice thing about the engine is that the parts are dirt cheap, since it has been around forever. I would be wary of the white, though. That could be a Caprice with Impala parts on it. Run a Carfax on it to check it.

My dad has a 94 Buick Roadmaster (with the LT1), and I can tell you I don't think it does the quarter that fast (15seconds), but I think ~16seconds would be pretty reasonable.
I'm thinking the 0-60mph is ~7seconds or so.

You probably will get yourself into a LOT of trouble with the pImpala :)

It was raced in the 1/4 mile a few times...supposedly did 14 seconds on it

New transmission at 87k Miles

Now you know why!

Thanks for all the information. I'm glad I posted here otherwise I might have got the wrong car :p
