Hey guys, I just got my parents a brand new iMac to replace their old POS computer. Everything works fine except for connecting their Canon HF200 to the computer, ill connect it in computer/USB mode and it just mounts the drive and does nothing else. iMovie does not recognize the camera and won't import the .mts files into the software. I can view the files individually with VLC but thats not going to help me much.

Any takers? I've tried most of the trouble shooting things, but I'm a windows user and i'll admit I dont know OSX very well. TIA!!

Had this problem myself and this (stolen from a forum) helped:
Connect HDR SR12 SONY by USB to Mac
Select USB CONNECT on camera's lcd
Camera's hard drive mounts on the desktop (I renamed it HDR SR12 from NO NAME)

(If you don't have the camera and are working from files copied from its hard drive, put all the folders and files in one folder--see list below--and image it using the following

Open DISK UTILITY
FILE: NEW: DISK IMAGE FROM FOLDER
NAVIGATE TO mounted camera disk
SELECT THE DISK ICON
HIT IMAGE
SAVE AS "HDR SR12" OR WHATEVER

THIS WILL COPY ALL OF THE FOLDERS AND FILE:

AVCHD
MODELCFG.IND
AVF_INFO
DCIM

as they are on the camera's hard drive.

Once the disk is imaged, eject the camera's hard drive from the desktop.

Mount the new disk image, either from Disk Utility or just clicking the .dmg. iMovie 08 should respond by opening the import screen and seeing the movie files just as if they were coming from the camera.

This should also work with files copied from the camera's hard drive, if you put them all in the same folder (see above list) and image it, using the NEW IMAGE FROM FOLDER in Disk Utility.

The .mts/.m2ts files are a fraction of the size of the Apple Intermediate codec files you get once iMovie has imported them.

Yeah I tried this as well and it didn't work :/. iMovie doesn't want to recognize the .mts files even if I drag and drop them manually into the program.

Its iMovie 2009 if that makes a difference. I was reading online that it doesn't support 1080i video?, Thats what the camera shoots in natively so maybe thats what the problem is. FCP7 does the same thing, won't recognize the files.

Get VoltaicHD, $35:

http://www.shedworx.com/voltaichd

Most video editing apps don't support MTS/M2T files outside of their card structure (a few do, like Sony Vegas). Easiest way is just to use VoltaicHD. Works on PC or Mac, converts the individual files to the format of your choice. You can also batch-convert, so you can convert a bunch of clips at once. If you don't want to convert, you'll either need to get an editor that supports editing AVCHD files natively, or get a different camera that has native iMovie support. Otherwise you'll need to convert them to iFrame, ProRes, AVI, MP4, whatever you like to edit with.

They should pay me a commission fee for how much I push this app, lol.

I seeeee....the thing is there are plenty of videos of people on youtube plugging the thing into the mac and it popping up in iMovie, doesn't happen with me though. There's lots of people with the same problem online but I haven't seen a good solution for it yet.

I'm trying to set it up for my parents, and the whole purpose of getting a mac for them was that its a lot easier and maintenance free for me. I would prefer a one program solution if possible.

I'll check the canon to see if theres an option to save in a different video format?
