We already lost Roger, though not because of the mods, but because of the declining 'average inteligence' (That's the best way I can put it) of AT; ATOT in specifc.
Getting a vacation for saying something idiotic (which I am not saying anyone's comment was idiotic btw) Isn't worth a vacation IMHO, but ATOT needs to be cleaned up a little (read:A Lot), as the mods have let more and more slide, which is perfectly fine. The issue comes when members don't know when to stop.
With AT becoming a larger and larger community, it becomes harder to police; which probably requires more Mods. The more Mods there are, the harder it is to 'calibrate' the actions between Mods so one Mod may do something like giving one week vacation instead of 2, or perhaps none at all. It makes it harder on the Mods (and members of course) that there is no written list of rules.
The fact of the matter is AT is no longer the 'tight nit' group that it used to be; where Mod action wasn't a constant need because the members were pretty good at knowing where the line in the sand was drawn, and were pretty good about not stepping over it. Now, with the influx of members that don't have the sence of mind (though age, maturity, whatever) that was evident before. Many new members pick up the crap that other existing members post, and that works into the new memebrs post. But because a new member said it instead of someone who has been here since the dawn of time (or is well liked, or whatever) they get a vacation. (though obviously that did not happen in this case)
I think it is human nature to give more leeway to an existing member than a new one. That is the only explanation as to why I have only been given 1 vacation instead of banned forever, anyway
😛
Is that a bad thing? Maybe. Maybe not. Do I know a way to 'fix' these issues? Nope. I don't think there is a 'best way' to run a forum and deal with members who go beyond a set point. I do howevr have at least one suggestion.
In the business world, there are calibration meetings over such things as review scores or other things that are subjectvie. Perhaps the Mods should have (I am assuming they do not now) some kind of calibration meeting, thread, or some such thing so all the Mods can get on the same page so to speak. The members will still have to make educated guesses as to where the line in the sand is, but the mods as a unit will all 'grade' posts closer to the same point.
Of course that raises the point of 'if I know where the line is, I will stay one 'word' short of it'. There should probably be a warning or something to members who irk a Mod (or the mod just hasen't had any coffee yet; whatever
🙂) Those warnings (Mod edits) used to be mroe previlant than they are now. Not sure what that means.
Ok, that was long and rambling. I'm done.
Oh, and don't anyone think that I include myself in the 'Perfect' group or whatever you call it. I have screwed up many a time (many many times), and count my blessings for only getting one vacation.
