It's nice how seamlessly iMessage works. I have a friend who just got a new iPhone 4S. I sent him a text from my iPhone 4. His response was through iMessage in the same conversation thread in the Messages app. His phone detected that my text came from an iPhone and used iMessage automatically in response. This works across cell networks too. I'm on AT&T, and he is on Verizon.
 
Yeah it's nice that it is integrated into the Messages app and don't need a separate app like BBM. It's great for someone like me who has texting blocked on their company phone
 
I sent a friend an iMessage. He got it on his iPhone, but not his iPad. He then sent me a new iMessage from his iPad. Now I have two iMessage threads on my iPhone from him. If I respond from thread 1, only his iPhone gets it. If I respond from thread 2, both his iPhone and his iPad gets it.

I have since shut off iMessaging, until this has been beta'd more by you early adopters.

That's because he has multiple emails/phone number linked to his iMessage account. When you sent to his iPhone you may have used a different contact email or phone number than the one he initiated from his iPad.

Thread 1 is linked to his iPhone number probably.

Thread 2 is linked to his email address, which is enabled on both his iPad and iPhone.

Could be a few things.

He might not have the proper email attached to his iPhone (you have to add it your self). If you're getting two separated iMessage threads from you, it's possible you don't have his email under the proper contact.

Just a thought.

Why would you expect him to get the same iMessage on two different iDevices?

Which just goes to show you, it's not a seamless integration of the messaging system. I'd expect that if I send an iMessage to a ID phone number, it goes to all of his accounts. There should be a way to link an iPhone phone number to an iPad account.

Also, the same guy tells me that when he sends himself an iMessage from his iPhone to his own iPhone number he never gets it. I on the other hand, I always get it when I send myself one from my iPhone to my iPhone number. There is definitely something odd about the implementation of iMessaging, since the behaviour isn't the same for both of us.

I will sit this one out, until all the kinks are worked out. SMS is fine for me at the moment. It Just Works™.

Because that's how it's supposed to work. If you register multiple items to one address, ALL of them get the same messages. Or at least they're supposed to, but judging by reports, it doesn't seem to happen consistently. The example I gave above about people not receiving their own iMessages to themselves illustrates the potential issues.

Another guy on another forum is saying that when he sends himself an iMessage from his own iPhone to his iDevices, his iPad gets it but that very same iPhone never does despite having both devices registered with the same email address. That's that doesn't induce confidence.

As long as I start a conversation or reply to a message on my iPad both of them have the conversation. I have even deleted a conversation on my iPad and when I pick it up again on my phone it shows back up the iPad.
 
Works correctly here - same msgs show on all iDevices, and I present one email to all people to reach me in iMessage; works great as long as they are all running iOS 5.

Can't believe some people still haven't upgraded to iOS5. Sigh.
 
Wow, glad I came across this thread. Not sure why but never thought to figure out why my iMessages weren't syncing between my iPhone 4 and iPad 2.
