IMEI number on Cell phone

Is it safe to give the IMEI number on a cell phone to a potential eBay buyer? Or is that a scam?

bidder states that he wants to check if the cell is stolen or not.

Good question. The last time I sold a phone I had a couple of people ask the same thing........
