IMB Thinkpad Startup Error Message

I posted this in General Hardware but am not sure if it falls into an OS problem as well...

...Here is the message that I receive when I try to start up my computer.

Following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced
Startup options for Windows 2000 press F8
You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows 2000 setup using the original setup floppy or cd-rom

When I tried to get into Safe Mode using F8 I got the same message as above. And when I tried F12, to get into the hard drive, I again got the same message.

1) What is the problem here?
2) I am unsure if this is even useful but would accessing the computer remotely to try and run an anti-virus program in safe mode be a possible solution to the problem?

Thanks,

-Dave

I would do the following 2 things:

1. Take out the drive and plug it in to another computer as a second drive to pull off any needed data.

2. Reinstall the OS.

3. Profit!

The system registry hive is corrupt and you need that hive intact to boot. If you had system restore on, you can probably use a recent backup of the hive (search here or at ms for instructions).

The hive shouldnt get corrupt, that tends to point to some other underlying problem (possibly a failing drive or overheating problem? sometimes on laptops its hard to tell when some of the internal fans have failed)
