IMAPI CD Burning (Native WinXP CD burning) is disabled and can't figure out why...

Usually I'm answering questions here intead of posting them, but this has me stumped.

I have a client that prefers to use WinXP's built-in IMAPI CD Burning feature (save files to the CD drive and then burn them from Explorer).

Somehow this feature was disabled on her computer. No idea how or why.

I have found several MS KB articles that address this and I have tried the fix in them all to no avail.

There is no "Recording" tab in either of the burner's (there's 2 burners on this system - a CD-RW and a DVD-RW) properties window (according to M$ this means that either IMAPI is disabled or that IMAPI doesn't recognize the drives as burners, or the burners aren't IMAPI compliant).

One drive is a stock CD-RW that came with the computer (the computer is a Dell Dimension 3000) and the other is a Lite-on DVD-RW that I installed.

Both are recognized as burners by IMAPI on other computers (she has an identical system in the office with the same drives installed and no problems). The drives are otherwise fully functional and work with Nero and Stomp's Backup MyPC. She can use Nero to burn CDs but she prefers to use IMAPI (she's an accountant and finds it easier just to do client Quickbooks backups right to the CD and burn it).

I have confirmed that neither Nero or Backup MyPC (both installed on this system) will disable IMAPI (tested this on my own testbed).

No other burning apps are installed and I've uninstalled Sonic DLA which came installed from the factory and also normally doesn't conflict with IMAPI from long experience.

I have already looked at KB articles 315350, 324129, 316529 and I've done several Google searches.

I'm hoping someone here has run into this before and has a fix.

What I've tried so far:

- Enabled the IMAPI service (is WAS disabled, no idea why or by what - I enabled it with the "Manual" setting as recommended by M$ and restarted it, rebooted). Service is running now, but I still have no "Recording" tab in burner's properties. Also tried the "Automatic" setting for the service.

- Uninstalled & allowed WinXP to redetect the drives

- Manually configured the drives as burners in the registry as per KB316529

- Checked the Group Policy editor to make sure that "Remove CD Burning Features" policy is not enabled (it wasn't).

If you have any ideas, LMK. Meanwhile I'll do more Googling when I have the time.

Thanks...

Can you install another burning sw just as a troubleshoot - to check that she is still able to burn

Nero is installed and she can burn CDs just fine with it. Also Backup MyPC burns a scheduled DVD backup every night with no problems.

Can you try a system restore to see if something recent knocked out the Windows CD burning yoot.

Oh yeah, and also, can you check event viewer for when you try to burn using winxp builtin cd burning software (has it got a name???) just to see if there is a dll missing

maybe windows got confused by the 2 burners somehow. try removing one and see you can get windows to show the record tab again for one burner then add the other back if it sees it. or you could do my method when things go awry, reformat :) works every time

System restore not practical. May have been this way for months and she's an accountant with hundreds of files outside the Documents folder which would revert.

Good point on the Event viewer. I failed to check it after I re-activated the IMAPI service.

Didn't have time that first visit to play with the cables, but that's a valid idea clark. Reformat is not an option - this is a mission critical system and she can live with using Nero if she has to.

I thought system restore doesn't really touch files, its more of a registry restore?
