IMAP with POP3

2 questions.

1. Is there a difference at the server between IMAP and POP3?

2. If server is set for IMAP can Outlook client be set to use POP3?

I have a good idea about the differences between the protocols, re syncing.

Imap keeps your files and folders on the server and pop3 keeps them on your local drive. I switched years ago after losing my pst file so that my mail would be preserved. Imap sync can take a little time depending on your mail server but to me it's well worth it to not have to worry about backing up pst files anymore. Outlook will use whatever protocol the sever supports so if it's imap then outlook uses imap. Each account is set to whatever the server uses and I wouldn't worry about trying to change it.

POP3 can leave stuff on the server. My GoDaddy email is POP3 and I use Outlook set for POP3. It downloads and deletes the email from the server. My phone and iPad are set for POP3 but configured to leave the email on the server. The phone and iPad are set to BCC THE SENDING ACCOUNT SO I get a copy for outlook to download.

My neighbor needs to have local PST so folders can be burned to CD. Her GoDaddy account is set to IMAP and her Outlook is set to IMAP as is her phone. On the PC there are 3 top level folders. One called IMAP, one with her name and one with a name EMAIL created by me. Incoming mail never shows in IMAP but in her name folder. She then copies it to the EMAIL folder.

I am trying to eliminate one of the first two folders and don"t understand why the mail does not appear in the IMAP folder.

Well, setup Outlook 2016 on the neighbors new Win 10 portable. Used IMAP and it created a single top level folder. Then copied the PST from the old PC and opened it in 2016. Have a 2nd top level folder. Just what she wants and understands.
