IMAP vs. POP

GMail user here, and after reading this I felt compelled to look into account settings and after ensuring that all Gmail sessions would be on an HTTPS connection, I wondered about the IMAP and POP option.

I don't download mail off Google's servers since it's neither private nor sensitive info, and TBH if subpoenas want the email my mum sent me about Australians and young drivers, or my friend's new background he's making in Photoshop, I really could care less.

Eventually my paranoia will take over and I'll have a private email server which I have to SSH into over six different proxies, but in the meantime I wonder which protocol is inherently more robust from a security standpoint while understanding that a complete evaluation is not totally possible since I do not have access to GMail's POP or IMAP settings

Thanks!

Well, since you don't download your mail off of Google's servers, it really doesn't matter.

If you're not using POP or IMAP then it doesn't matter. And from a security standpoint both are about equal, you still need SSL for either of them. The main difference is whether you want to leave your mail on the server (IMAP) or download and delete (POP) it.

IMAP is a better protocol since it offers the ability to have your mail in sync across multiple pcs
