Thunderbird? Mail?

I'm used to Thunderbird, but I'm not attached to either one. Any reason to pick one over the other?

Changed topic to:
So, I set up Mail and it seems pretty nice, but there's one major problem...

It doesn't really sync with IMAP. I've googled, and this is a reasonably common problem (I don't think it's universal, otherwise there'd be major outcry, but I'm not alone here).

What happens is if the iPhone gets the mail "first", no matter how many times I "synchronize" or take offline/back online, or "get mail", the messages don't show up until I restart the mail program (on the mac)

The same thing happens if I delete a message on my iPhone. It just stays there on my Mac. When I restart the mail app on the mac...poof, it disappears.

Is this an issue with my email server? A configuration thing? Like I said, I'm not alone in this, and it never happened in Thunderbird. It's kind of a big issue. Any ideas?

I stick with Mail, once in a blue moon I have a runaway RAM problem, but other than that, it is fast, responsive, and works with POP, IMAP and Exchange (at least on Snow Leopard).

Another vote for Mail, the best e-mail client I've ever used.

When my Hack was out of commission temporarily, I used just Windows 7 for over a month. And the biggest issue I had was with a good email client. Windows Live Mail, Eudora, Thunderbird, everything I tried was just bad. Outlook and Mail are the only 2 that I like.

bingo. tried out thunderbird and it was okay (on osx), but its pretty good on windows.

Yeah, I was a big Thunderbird fan when I used Windows (I switched to Mac about 2 years ago). Before that, I used Eudora (I started using Eudora in 1992(?). When I went from Mac to Windows in 1997 I kept using it until switching to TB a few years ago.)

I really like PostBox, but it's not enough better that I find I want to pay to switch from using Mail.

Vote for mail.
Though it is annoying when it doesn't update the server so you get unread count not only in your inbox but also in your imap inbox folder.

I'll have to see if I can get it to agree with my work IMAP server. I'm not sure if I have a standard configuration. When I load it normally, I get all the files in my root directory. When I said the IMAP dir to mail, it works...I get the inbox and stuff, but my "sent mail" and "trash" etc, show up as folders and are not synced to the pretty little icons under "mailboxes".

My work might have instructions for this, but I'm not in their network and their IT pages aren't available to the outside world.

Edit: Changed title.

I think that has to be server related, as I use Mail with Gmail and it syncs just fine. Does better than MS Exchange actually.

Yeah, it doesn't seem to happen with another IMAP account. I wonder what in the server is causing this, but also why it only manifests in Mail and not in Thunderbird....

Have you tried actually doing 'Get Mail' when you delete the message? It seems like the client isn't keeping a connection to the server. (cmd+shift+n = get mail)

Yup. Emailed myself in Mail. Showed up in the inbox as unread. Went to iPhone, read it. Command+shift+n. No change on Mail. Deleted it from iPhone. Command+shift+n. No change.

Did it the other way: Emailed myself (on Mail). Went to iPhone, furiously refreshing until it showed up (trying to make sure I get to it before Mail does). Read it on iPhone. Command+shift+n, nothing.

One thing I noted, that was weird, is sometimes command+shift+n doesn't seem to do anything. Other times, it sends the little thingees next to the servers spinning. When it doesn't do anything, it still selects the "mailbox" menu item (I see it flicker) and I can see brief flickering next to the servers. Is there some kind of timeout where you can't check your mail a certain number of times? Is my mail just broken?

:-(
