Imaging HD with commercial vs HD Mfr. software?

I am getting a second HD to backup my entire HD (after doing complete
reinstalls twice in the last 3 months). Why would anyone purchase programs
like Norton Ghost when companies like Western Digital and Maxtor give you
software that will copy the entire contents from one drive to another?
Thanks, Ron

Do the Mfr utilities allow you to grab by partition?

1. Because they allow you to image the drive instead of cloning it. That means if you have two 60gig drives but you've only used 15g, you can save several backups and roll back further than the most recent backup if necessary. You can also compress the images to fit more on the drive.

2. Because you can use an explorer like tool to retrieve just a few files from a backup rather than have to do a complete restore.

3. With Drive Image you can schedule automatic unattended backups.

4. You can clone or image partitions separately so you can restore individually as needed.
