Someone asked me today if it was possible to scan over the network. Like have a scanner directly on the ethernet or have it attached to a PC and shared. The only way I could see this happening is to connect it to a PC and share the port then map it to another PC, install the scanner software and tell the software that the scanner is installed on the mapped port. I have never heard of ones that plug directly into the network. Anyone have experience with this? I would think it would be better to just go to the machine and scan locally b/c u will have to interact with the scanner anyway... u never know what people can think up.

Regular Scanners are not mapping capable devices.

There are expensive professional Scanners that are network capable.

In any case, some one has to be at the scanner to put the material in, so He/She might as well scan and make the file available.
