Image quality of Geforce MX vs. Voodoo 3 3000

Does the geforce MX image quality in BOTH 2d and 3d at least equal that of the V3. I'm pretty happy with both the 2d and 3d image of the voodoo card, but I'm looking for a cheap upgrade, something that at least keeps the image quality I have, while improving overall performance. I've heard concerns over the MX's image quality from various other forums. I'm specifically looking at the elsa gladiac mx card. The elsa cards seem to do a bit better at the image quality compared to the others. Also, are there any issues with the MX's and playing the Homeworld games?

Thanks for any opinions.

I have both a V3 3k and a retail Hercules Prophet II MX. IMHO the GeForce is hands down the winner. The MX has a much cleaner and brighter display at all resolutions compared to my ol Voodoo.

A majority of GF2 MXes have horrendous 2D quality in very high resolutions.

I normally do desktop stuff at 1024x768 or the 1200xwhatever (that's the max res on my 17" monitor). I like to play in the higher resolutions in games if it permits. If the 2D image quality is at least equal to the voodoo 3 at these resolutions, I'll go get me a new nvidia card :)

When getting your Geforce based card, be sure to get either an ELSA or VisionTek brand.
Then you can be sure of getting razor-sharp 2D quality, as well as an awesome board in general. :) Anyone else and who knows what you'll get. I was very disappointed by ASUS. :(
ELSA rocks! :)

Visiontek MAKES the ELSA cards, so Visionteck Rocks! :D

yeah, get the elsa/visiontek MX and run it at 1024 or less and you'll be fine, but the MX can't really run games super fast at above 800x600 32bit.

I am completely satisfied with the 2D and 3D of both my Geforce 2 MX cards. I never run higher than 1024x768 resolution and up to that point, they perform great in games even with full detail and 32 bit color. My 2D is every bit as good as the Voodoo 3 3000 I used to run in one of my systems. I would recommend the upgrade. FWIW, I have the Creative Labs Annihilator 2 MX (DDR ram) and the A-Open Geforce 2 MX (SDR), should be able to get either one for around $100 or so.

The GeForce2 MX would win hands down in terms of display quality, in both 2D & 3D over the Voodoo. Dont plan on using them @ resolutions above 1024x768, though, coz they slow down quite a bit.

The MX will look better in 3D games because of large textures, 32 bit colour, T&L, bump-mapping and other features.

As for 2D, the V3 has superb 2D image quality. A lot of GF2 MX boards will look very poor when compared to the Voodoo.

Man.... you guys DO more than play games right? You won't notice the 2D quality within a game much.
When I talk about running your resolution higher than 1024x768, I also mean on the DESKTOP where you have to run TEXT applications! There's where you need the good 2D quality. Go ahead and run the games at 800x600 or whatever the card can handle. :)
My desktop is usually between 1024 and 1280 depending on the app and the day. :)

Bluemax,

Sounds like your fairly happy with the 2D of the Elsa/Visiontek. Like I said in my original post, both 2D and 3D are important. I probably spend more time on the internet, and creating spreadsheets than I do on playing games, however games are much more fun (hence the need for something a bit more powerful than the V3).

Thanks for all the replies. As long as the 2D of the Elsa MX is approximately equal to the V3 then I'll be happy.

I'd like to add that regarding 2D image quality, my Gainward CARDEXpert GF2 MX looks just as good as my Voodoo 3 did at 1024 x 768 x 75 Hz.

the geforce really isn't worse at 1024x768 at 2d. 3d it will roast the v3. But 1280x1024 @ 75hz and higher will start to look blurry and faded in 2d, because of the rfi problem. Like someone else said get a elsa/visiontek (same exact thing) if you are gonna get one. But why? a radeon 32mb ddr costs $88 shipped now (well thats the 148/148 version but still good) OEM and with some work you can even get it to work well in win2k , like i did. ANd in 98 it should be pretty easy

Actually, I had one of those buy.com coupons leftover before buy.com pulled them. I used that coupon and got a retail radeon for around $125 shipped. So far, very happy. The install went really well, and have had no problems so far. Much better than the old V3.
