Image IDE OS to SATA

Okay guys,

I'm getting my Segate 'Cuda 160gig SATA drive next week. What's the best method to copy entire OS n some Apps to the new SATA drive? I hae Norton ghost 2005 and other one called TrueImage. What's the chance to able to move everything from old drive to the new drive?

I don't think changing interface could be a problem with re-imaging. AFAIK drive interface has nothing to do with image not working UNLESS you are installing it on another motherboard.

Yeah I'm going gave Norton Ghost 2005 a try. Oh yeah, Im not changing mobo or anything, Im using using different interface(IDE to SATA).

While booted from the IDE drive:
In Device Manager, change the IDE controller from any chipset-specific one to: "Standard IDE Controller". Then boot from the Ghost floppy (or bootable CD) and copy the IDE drive to the pre-formatted SATA drive.
Or, the DOS command "XCOPY" would probably also work, if the correct /* modifiers are used.

Also be sure to have SATA drivers installed so the OS can use the drive

Yeah, so basically I do the following and correct if I'w wrong:


1: Install SATA
2: Install SATA driver
3: Ghost it( IDE to SATA)
3: remove IDE
4: Config BIOS to boot in SATA?

1. Change to "Standard IDE Controller".
2. Reboot required.
3. Shut down & attach SATA drive.
4. Boot from WinXP install CD. Partition & format the new SATA drive.
5. Boot from a floppy or CD; image the IDE drive to the new SATA drive. A single (non-raided) SATA drive is usually recognised without needing any special SATA driver.
6. After copying is done, reboot, and select (in bios setup) the new boot sequence (SATA drive first).
7. The SATA should now boot. If there's any problems, boot from the WinXP install CD, and do a reinstall on top of the existing data.

pretty much.
I do this type of thing all the time... never had a problem.

Smooth as silk. One question, how come my SATA drive detected as PnP?

What do you mean detected as PnP? As in, it's removable? SATA drives are hot swappable.. although it's probably not a good idea to do it, especially not with your boot drive

Sorry about that. I meant like this. On the tray, I see the SATA drives showing at a removable. It's this how it is?
