iMac vs Mac Pro

Right now I'm running a really aging Mac Pro:

Early 2009
2x 2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xenon
14GB Ram
Hard Drive

I know I need an upgrade, but I'm not sure if I want to shell out $3-4K for a new Mac Pro. I know they are coming out with the iMac Pros this December, but I have a feeling they are going to be WAY over my budget.

So I was wondering if I could get by with a new iMac

The new ones have:

3.4GHz quad-core 7th-generation Intel Core i5 processor (upgradeable to i7)
I'd probably upgrade the RAM to 32GB
Fusion Drive

I mostly use the Adobe creative suite applications. Photoshop, illustrator, indesign, dreamweaver, etc... for graphic design and web design work.

You think that would be a solid enough upgrade and that I'd notice the difference? Right now my Mac Pro is SO SLOW. Like it takes 10-20 minutes to reboot and for everything to calm back down again.

I'd start by putting an SSD in your Mac Pro as its boot drive.

I have a 3.2GHz 2008 Mac Pro, and it definitely doesn't take that long to get itself up and running. From pressing the power button to everything being back up and how I left it and ready to work, it's 1.5min TOPS (i've never put a stopwatch on it, but I don't feel like i'm waiting).

Do you think changing the boot drive for a SSD would change that much? Right now, everything is god awful slow. Even previewing a photo in finder seems to take forever. I haven't updated the OS since 10.10.5 because I'm not sure the machine could handle it.

Most definitely. My MBP mid 2009 was crawling like a legless dog. Popped in an SSD and BAM! like getting a new MBP.

Damn that still seems like a long time lol. My MBP from mid-2014 boots up with everything left off as I had it when shutting down in about 9-10 seconds.

I just timed it, 45s. One way or another it's not 10min+ like OP is dealing with. They need an SSD, stat.

Also, OP hit me up on PM with your Mac Pro model number, I might have a pair of compatible 3.2GHz Xeons to sell you.
