Hello,

I have a friend with an iMac 333Mhz (rev. D) blueberry system that is in dire needs of a larger hard drive. Here is the situation:

He only has a 2 GigaByte hard drive, and is running OS X 10.3.9 on it, and has less than 50 MB of free space. I happened to get a 20 GB hard drive off of another friend that was never used, and I am giving it to him as a gift.

He would like to keep his existing setup the way it is, and copy the hard drive (make a bootable image of it on the new hard drive) to the larger one. I have come across three programs that seem to be the right price (free ) and will do what he wants:

1) Super Duper

2) Lacie SilverKeeper 1.1.4

3) Carbon Copy Cloner 2.3 (a.k.a. CCC 2.3)

Now, I have read some posts that acknowledge lacie's silverkeeper working with an external usb drive and I beleive that CCC does the same.

Now here is where it gets interesting. Will they copy the partition / image exactly, and only use that 2GB rather than the whole 20 GB... will the new backup only show 2GB and hide the other 18GB so to speak?

I recently started playing with Apple with a second hand G3 Lombard powerbook... to see if I want to get a mac mini and perhaps switch to Macs.

I also need to know if I need to partition the hard drive for OS X to be less than 8 GB, because reading the info in an article titled "Is the Tray Loading iMac a Good Choice for OS X?" and they state about half way down the page:

The second big tray-loading iMac problem is shared with the WallStreet PowerBooks and beige G3 Power Macs - any drive over 8 GB must be partitioned, the first partition must be smaller than 8 GB, and these models will only boot from OS X if it's installed on the first partition.

So, how should I go about doing this? I've read how to dissassemble the iMac, and where all the internal components are... I am prepared to spend an afternoon doing this favour.

Also how do I go about making the partition with the OS X a little bigger so there is more room on it, and is it true about the fact that the primary partition with the OS must be less than 8 GB or the iMac won't work as states in that quote I have?

If this is in the wrong forum, I would appreciate a little help as to where to put this request as well.

Thank you :)
