iMac: 10.5.8 - Upgrading to Lion: How?

I have an iMac here at work that has Snow Leopard 10.5.8 installed. I was under the impression that if I ran a software update, I would be updated to 10.6, thus allowing me to download and install the Apple Store application, which would then allow me to upgrade to Lion.

Am I wrong here? I ran Software Updates and it says there are no updates.

10.5.8 I believe is Leopard. Snow Leopard started at 10.6. I believe you would have to buy a Snow Leopard upgrade and once that is installed, you can upgrade to Lion.
