I'm writing a paper on scientific achievements. Any1 care to share their input on this topic (cloning, cryonics, etc.)

I'm in the midst of doing research for a paper on science. I'm really interested in including details on subjects such as advances in genetic cloning, cryonics, space exploration, etc. In fact I came across an interesting little link this morning. Some of you might get a kick out of this - click here

Does anyone here know the details about the project Star Wars US defense system? From what I've gathered its a series of satellites that can attack missles with the use of lasers. What I'm wondering is does this satellite have offensive capabilities and do other nations besides the United States have similar defense systems?

Feel free to add any interesting comments about science or technology

If you found out they would have to kill you j/k.;)

Seriously, little of this is out there for public consumption. A lot of "black budget" money is probably filtering into these projects. Wouldn't be suprised to see if there is some railgun or particle weapon research going on to give lasers a run for the money. Everyone knows about lasers and assumes that is the technology of choice, but I am not so sure.

Edit- Cryogenics. Sounds a bit optomistic to me. I wonder how the proteins in the brain do in cold storage.

Cloning. If you mean plants, etc. it is being done all the time, but not in the way most people think. Apical meristem cloning works fine. Organ cloning may be useful some day. Human cloning is the stupidest thing proposed. Nothing to do with morality, unless you want to get into the "mercy" killing of 10 year old clones that develop horrible medical/psychological defects which do not show up at birth. Oh I expect that someone will do it in a few years, but when the defects show up I hope they infect the idiot doctors who did this with leprosy and put them in isolation. Yeah I mean it too. This will be a horror show of cinematic proportions unless some radically new technology comes along.

For something positive, look at the alternative energy generation by waves. (Note, NOT tides) Tremendous potential here. Enough to supply the entire worlds' needs forever. Simple technology that works.

particle weapons? sounds interesting, think I'll do a little research on that.

thanks for the info, this is the kinda stuff I'm interested in putting in my paper

Do you have any links to more information about the alternate energy creation? Thats a really interesting topic

My take on Star Wars was that it was basically, one of the biggest BLUFFS in history. Reagan never intended to actually create it, it was just a huge ploy to scare the nuts off the Soviets. And IT WORKED! Never play poker with Ronald Reagan!

I'm not sure about this, but wasn't the whole Star Wars thing cancelled? Or maybe they just said it was cancelled but there are really laser satellites above our head right now.
