Im writing a generic Resume

My proffessor offered to take up my resume to hand out to bunch of companies that are looking. Should i do a cover letter as well? never done a generic one. Any tips?
 
Sorry for the bump, but iv decided il do one.
I was always told not to use "To whom it may concern", but since this is a generic one i am going to assume it will be allright?
