Awesome! It just came on TV randomly, I haven't seen this movie for like 10 years - it's stuff like this that got me into technology as a kid. Makes me want to break into computers though... must resist...

Yeah its super sweet - I just re-watched it a few weeks ago. The term 'war-dialing' came from that movie, and the modern-day 'war-driving'.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY A GAME

Yea I love all that old tech, it was so simple and raw. SQL injection attacks just don't get the blood flowing like a stack of funky home-built electronics plugged into the phone line.

Apparently there's a sequel. I saw it at blockbuster. Looks like it sucks.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?

This past 24th was the 25th anniversary of the movie. The local theater had a special showing of the film along with a sneak peek of the sequel.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could program a computer to learn so easily.... well, maybe, unless it went SkyNet on you, then it would suck.

"Alright Lightman. Why don't you tell the class who came up the theory of reproduction without sex."

"Um...your wife?"

Is there a way to get the computer to play itself?
Try 0 for the number of players.

I'm sure I screwed up those lines, but I loved how 0 players wasn't an error condition. :)

I rented it. They couldn't have tried harder to duplicate the first one. It wasn't actually too bad, but it didn't exactly break new ground creatively. Definitely not as good as the first one.

I almost rented this in HD from the playstation store, but I came quite fearful that it wouldn't hold up to my much higher standards now that I'm not 7 years old. Is this movie actually a good movie, or is it one of those "good because I saw it in the 80's as a kid" movies?

The technology is obviously dated, but it is an excellent movie. Plus, they have good actors: Matthew Broderick, Ally Sheedy, Barry Corbin, Dabney Coleman (I think).

Thanks for the link to the Wired article SoulAssasin. It addressed my earlier post.

Lasker: David Lewis wasn't exactly the inspiration. But he was a model. You could call him up in the middle of the night and ask, "Can you get a computer to play games with itself?" And he'd say, "Yes! Number of players: zero."

If you go back and watch the beginning of the movie, there are the 2 guys responsible for firing nuclear weapons walking inside a military base to their posts. As they are walking they are talking about growing weed, and there is a sign in the background that says "no urinating on the premises". The 80's were awesome!

I especially like the part where the garage attendant is like, "Relax... I'm a professional."

...and when he has to have Denzell Washington whipped. You know... for the good of the regiment.

But honestly, once the hammers and shit started popping out of his trench coat, I lost interest.
