in my attempt to participate in the name that movie thread, i hit "print screen" while playing a dvd on my computer. I then procede to paste it in MSPaint (also tried it with photoshop), but i dont pause the movie.
To my surprise the movie continues platying in Paint. When i pause in media player it pauses. If i try to save the file, it shows up black. If i eject the DVD, the screen goes black.

Can someone explain to me what is going on? 😕

you can't take screenshots of movies with the print screen key. the only media player that lets you take screenshots in it that I know of is VLC.

Media Player Classic allows you to do it as well.

Media Player Classic will if you set the rendering device to something other than Overlay.

Anyway, what you just encountered was Video Overlay. It's a technique used since the olden days, wherein the screen area on which video is to show is indicated by a special color. (in this case a near-black gray) This means less computation (theoretically) for the OS; when the window is partially obscured by another window so is the near-black.
