So it's been a while and now it's finally time for me to upgrade. It's perhaps interesting that a lot of the HSF designs don't seem to have changed much in the 5-6 years since I assembled my system. Still, enough has changed and I'm far enough out of the loop that I'll ask for advice...

Right now I have a Sonata I case and a Scythe Ninja (I guess this would be a Ninja 1 seeing how Newegg lists a Ninja 3 nowadays). I'm all about quiet computing and I've been pretty happy with this setup on my Opteron 165 system (s939).

Seeing how the Opteron's TDP is 110W and the CPUs I've been looking at are rated at 95W, I'm guessing the Ninja should have no problem assuming it can be mounted to the new socket. So...how difficult is it to attach a s939 HSF to a modern socket 1156? Am I better off just biting the bullet and buying a new HSF?

If your Ninja came with socket 775 mounting hardware, there are a lot of boards out there that have 775 mounting holes even on 1156 and 1366 sockets. 😉
