I'm very impressed with what ATi has done in the past year BUT...

...the NV40 looks AMAZING (if the inqwell's specs are correct). 16 pipes AND hardware MPEG4 encoding/decoding. Things look very promising for the Nvidia camp this spring. ATi's R420 hasn't been hyped up nearly as much as of late. All of this hoopla is reminding me of the weeks just before the 9700 was released.

If this thing doubles my 9700's performance across the board I'm going to be very tempted to jump ship. The HDTV output and TV filtering looks interesting as well.

Only time will tell I suppose...

The FX 5800 Ultra looked very good on paper as well, but it didn't exactly beat out the 9700 Pro like it was supposed to.

What will they benchmark it against though? when is ATI's newest contender supposed to step into the ring?

There is no way anyone can even vote for either card since nobody has any idea how good they'll turn out.

Not true - many people have already made up their mind about which card they are going to buy - even without finalized specs for either card. It's the nature of the beast. Fanboyism and brand loyalty at it's finest ;) !

Nah, I voted just fine. A couple days of ATI driver related crashes is all I needed to hate my 9800 Pro, which up until now has been an awsome card.

It could turn out to be interesting. Suppose NV is faster in raw speed, say in Farcry?

NV40? 150fps
R420 ? 125fps

But ATI still has better AA and maybe 32xAF, and takes less of a performance hit doing it ?

NV40? 70fps?? 4AA/8AF
R420 ? 80? ? 4AA/32AF

Then what do you do?

I voted R420 because I think ATI has improvements with AA/AF up their sleeve. They have made a commitment to improved IQ so I would be surprised if we don?t see something there. It would be very interesting if they managed to have something like free AF.

Well, Nvidia hypes their products a lot more than ATI does. Don't buy the hype and just wait till both cards are out and then decide if you're still impressed with the NV40.

Yup, like Cybercat pointed out how expectations are not always realized. I remember quite a few people on various messageboards who wouldn't buy a 9700Pro, because the next GeForce was going to be better. They waited and waited, when the card came out and it wasn't as good, many chose to wait some more. Many others eventually broke down and made the switch.

i'm guessing that nvidia also has made imporvements to their aa and af, it would be silly for them not to. the heat is on for both companies, and that usually means it will be a tight race.

interesting looking at the pole results ast they stand though, 36% nvidia fanboys, 15% ati fanboys, and 49% rational people. :D

210-220 Million transistors
16x1 Pipelines
Even Further Improved P.S Performance
ALL new and improved AA and FSAA Far superior to any around are the rumors from ( Nvidia )
for there NV40 - 45 they are changing the rules of how this game is played.

And it Looks like Nvidia Jumped the gun and have gone right for there NV45 card because NV40 just wasn?t specked good enough to secure them unprecedented victory in the performance sector.

This has resulted in Nvidia releasing a card 1 month behind ATI maybe 2 but will be a full product revision earlier ATI will more then likely counter attack by releasing there revision easier then they wanted to but I'm sure Nvidia would have already won over the performance crown marginally.

But again this could all be B.S Comming from Nvidia i'm very interested how this all turns out.

\

People said this about the FX series too, and Nvidia did basically squat with aa/af

if they told you that a stripper came out of the card and serviced you while playing games would you believe them? nvidia can say anything they want. whether any of it is true is a different matter. ati is in no position to gloat after the hl2 debacle so no matter how much their new cards dominate nvidia's you're not going to hear about it.

Hype doesn't mean anything... matrix reloaded got hyped like no other. Don't get me wrong im a matrix freak and still loved the movie, but it wasnt as good as the first one was. (story line sucked special effects rocked) So reloaded was somewhat of a disapointment... will the NV40 be a dispapointment? Their wasnt much hype abouth the R300 because ATI was a big underdog... and they had the 8500 (R250?) for a lonnng time. So maybe hype doesn't mean anything? I'm waiting to see what happens before i vote, my votes a "too early to tell"

Good luck to both vendors =\

Matrix, I first read it as Matrox. ;) I remember the hype for the Parhelia, it was gonna rock our world.
