I always like using computers and OS's that aren't PC's and Windows :) It's something new to play with.

What is Solaris like on X86?

If you're the only one using it doesn't that kinda make it a PC? It's not as if it's a server with only a single user.....

To answer your question: "What is Solaris like on X86? "
It's like Linux on x86 only you're supposed to pay for it.

I guess so :) I meant to say " I always like using computers and OS's that aren't X86 and Windows

You can download a free copy of Solaris for x86 (for non-commercial use).

I want one. My Ultra 10/440 is getting long in the tooth, and needs memory... Specs? And how does it feel, speed wise? (Solaris normally feels a bit sluggish, even on big hardware)

Gimme gimme gimme!

Actually from what I've heard disk performance on the Blade 100's isn't very good, any first hand comments?
A Blade 150 would be nice too, don't know about the disk performance on those, but they have the newer UltraSPARC IIi's with 512 KB of L2, and they're not unreasonably priced.

Sun should put out a "higher low-end" workstation based on the US-IIIi IMO, a pricepoint around $2.000-$2.500 would make that pretty attractive.

Solairs on x86 is a joke, i had a crappy experience with it. better off just sticking to a linux or unix based distro.

IMHO the disk performans of the Blades isn't any worse then that of a Netra. It depends what you're gonna use them for. It's not like they're gaming platforms or huge RAID arrayed Enterprise servers.

The Netra's don't suffer from crappy ALi ATA controllers.

Unless you count the "PC based on a SPARC" X1/V1x0's.

I wonder if the Promise hack will work for Sunblade 1[05]0s too... Anyone got a PDC20267 sitting around? (possibly going to try this in my ultra 10 when I get it working properly, should help disk access a LOT)

I get to play with those, a few v120's and a 480.:)

Let us know when you get a fully loaded 4800. They're sweet ;)

I could use one. Processing real time radar data uses alot of resources. We got the 480 hoping that we could run 64 radars at once.

The 480s were nice, but I wouldn't be putting huge mission/time critical type things on them. At my last job I had a 3800 and a 4800 (both just about fully decked out) to use. VERY nice. Got to play with a decent 6800 configuration for a while too. Between power and capabilities, I'd recommend them to just about anyone ;)

EDIT: And 6800 clustering is something to drool over too :D
