Hello gents, ive just bought a cheap wireless router a Dlink 524 and it has a built in firewall.

im running XP with Windows built in firewall and i keeps reading forums saying that its rubbish, should i get a decent software firewall or stick with Winxp's own?

Thanks in advance 🙂

Defenitely need a firewall.
I run a program called snort, that monitor traffic.
In just two hours it banned 8 ips that tried to connect to one of my servers.
Most for using cyberkit and the latest msn trojan.
Thats an average of 96/100 illegal connection attempts a day .
Run it without a firewall ? No way !

And that traffic would only make it through if your border firewall was letting it through so that's not a very good reason to recommend a software firewall on the host.

You need s software Firewall because the Entry Level Router's NAT Firewall protects the network only from None initiated traffic.
However, in the current state of affairs uninvited traffic is a small part of the comprehensive "Scum" that a regular Internet user is exposed to.

P.S. Many answers on public forums like this answer giving tend to reflect a specific setting and technical capacity of the answer giver rather than considering seriously the actual need of the OP.

In many instances, there is also the Aura Macho behavior. I.e the poster in the background thinks like this.

Software Firewall? What me Dude? No way, I am not afraid of the Internet, and need No sticky Firewall Dude! 😉

Similar to the approach of helmet usage in dangerous situations.

There's nothing macho about it, a software firewall's main use on a host is to protect from unwanted outbound traffic and because everything running on my machine has my explicit permission to run, I have no need for a software firewall.

The machine with snort is my border firewall.

The point of my post was that there were an average of 100 instances of traffic that a firewall should block. I didn't recommend a software or hardware firewall, just that he should use one.

There's no debating that everyone should run some form of firewall but just about everyone out there already has one in the form of their SOHO router so no unwanted inbound traffic will get through unless someone figures out how to exploit your particular device.

Yap, that exactly what I meant my comment.

In other words you should add to your posting concerning Software Firewall.

No need for software Firewall if everything running on the machine has my explicit permission to run.

With addtional few words to what permission to run might mean in many cases of regular end-users.
