He called it PMT and said that it's basically some needles that get stuck into the area that has pain (my lower back) and then they'll run an electrical current through those needles.

He said it will "retrain my pain receptors" and that it's a new treatment but so far it's had very good results.

I can't seem to locate what this PMT stands for and my wife seems to *think* that the needles are guided via x-ray to the correct location but could be incorrect in that.

Anyone know WTH the full name is or have any links on info for it.

I just wanna research as much as I can about it prior to agreeing to have it done so I can know all risk and side effects associated with it.

I'm not a doctor and I've not found out what PMT refers to, there are some therapies with this abbreviation but they are for kidney diseases and cancer treatment and don't use electricity.

Also, with my humble knowings of physics I doubt that an intrusive current therapy would do much good and pain per se isn't visible either with X-rays.

However, pain treatment with electricy is common practice but the current doesn't go much under the skin. The electrodes are not needles but either band-aid like or attached to sponges, and emit the electrons on a surface of several square centimeters. They look like this (this "PMT" company is the only link to electrical pain treatment I've found).

My father underwent several pain treatment sessions of this kind at a chiropractic (the method is in use in conventional medicine, too) because of a whiplash injury and it worked. It's neither painful nor especially comfortable.

I think the needle thing was a misunderstanding, and if not you likely will encounter very short needles. Anyway, get well soon!
