I know that the drive is good,I have it in an externalo encloser to usb and it is recognized by windows when I have it in the usb encloser but if have it in my laptop and try to boot from a OS disc it says that there are no hard drives found in the system
both drives are 7200rpm seagate momentus
I'm thinking that maybe my new drive draws too much power?

Silly but easy mistake to make - make sure it is slotted in hard enough.

If it was, post back.

it is an nx860xl gateway
yes it was firmly in the slot I had it in there twice thinking that it might be loos or that the power slot was not making contact but it was

Was there a hdd password lock in BIOS?
You would know if there was cos everytime you booted up, it would tell you that you had to input a password.

yes there is a password lock in the bios
should this be disabled and then it will work?

You might have to put the old drive back in, then disable it.

Then try the new drive.

It depends on which lock you have, the HDD lock, or the BIOS lock.
Try it anyway.

okay, when you put the new HDD in did you go into bios 1st and check to see if it's identified? I know some gateways do some format thing to the hdd before you can do anything.

yes it shows up in the bios
it doesnt show on POST although nothing else does either
gateway doesn't have a POST screen

I'm thinking there isn't enough power getting to the drive
it works fine in my sata to usb working with only the power of the usb connection no external power
I think that maybe this sata is being stingy with it's power
Gateway support is saying that the issue is with the hard drive not the laptop but I don't buy it

I had a feeling, may be same series but a gen or 2 off, and the new may be SATA 3 and the old is SATA 1.5
