I'm trying to get a cruncher farm going here, can anyone help?

Hey everyone! I've been toying with the idea for sometime. Basically i have a ton of 'puter parts that are just lying around(Durons, AXP's, Gigs of DDR, some motherboards) and with a little bit of money i can have a cruncher farm to contribute to either F@H or S@H. (needs to me a nix client)

I'm having a hard time figuring out how i can get all of this setup. What i want is: A server with a HD to boot up the other computers over the network. Basically, this is the cheapest way since i already have an old 450Mhz PII machine with a harddrive and two nics. Now, im a network noob, but i assume i can plug my Router into one NIC on the PII server, and attach the other NIC to a switch and use either Cluster Knoppix, or Red Hat and LTSP to boot these machines with PXE (the mobos have intergrated LAN cards).

Basically, does anyone have cruncher farm, and can offer some wise words of advice to me. I'm a total nix noob and it's a pretty daunting task to get everything configured up, and networked properly. Even if you use something different like overfoldnix- whatever, tell me how you setup your cruncher farm so i can get idea of my own planned out. I would prefer network boot (cheaper, won't have to buy HD's or Floppy's or CD-ROMs for each machine) but if that way is easier it may be worth the money.

Thanks!

ClusterKnoppix will network boot all your clients from 1 server with the CD, im not sure how you would go about starting a DC client once its booted though 😕

Hopefully someone will drop by and suggest something for ya 🙂

Ahh yea, i already installed Cluster Knoppix to the hardrive and setup /fah directories off the root directory. What im wondering is how i intergrate this into my current network (4port b+g wlan router + 4PC's wired into it and 2wireless lappys) And how i should run F@H. When i get it started im sure it'll be a littlre more clear, but can i just run like 5-6instances of F@H with different machine ID#'s and openmosix will automatically use the idle clustered PC's to crunch or if i'll have to share the /fah directory to the clients and manually have each one crunch F@H locally. Anyone understand that?

Im pretty sure with OpenMosix, you just have to run 1 instance of F@H for each clustered PC and it will automagically balance the load between the PCs 🙂

EDIT: The link danzigrules posted above looks like what u need 🙂
