I've got an overnight layover there next month waiting to get back to the mainland. What's a good hotel that's affordable, nice, etc... Thanks for any recommendations.

If you're just staying there one night, not planning on going to the beach or what have you, then I think your only concerns would be easy access to the airport (public transportation) and cleanliness (and cost I guess).

True. I'm actually staying on Kauai for a week and flying through Honolulu...but I'll have a whole day there and will catch the red eye out at 11pm. (which is like 4am my time I think)

Just want to find a nice place that will let us sleep good, have plenty to do around it, and hold our luggage in storage for the day so we're not stuck lugging it around. :p

Ah, well then you may want to stay near Waikiki, I understand that's where most of the tourists stay. The book Ohau Revealed would give you some good advice, but it's not really worth buying for just one day. You should check out Kauai Revealed though since you'll be there a while. If you think you'll be tired of going to beaches after your week in Kauai, then it's worth spending your day on Oahu visiting the Arizona Memorial (along with the USS Missouri and the USS Bowfin). Those buses can be tricky though.

I have a friend who went and stayed in Hostels for like $15 dollars a night or something cheap. You have to share a bathroom(its down the hall) and have a roomate but its cheap.
He would stay one night, then surf all day and party all night for the next 24 hrs (ie sleep on the beach). then do it again for some rest and a shower. So it make you only have to pay 7.50 a day, if you think of it that way.

A couple of years ago, I stayed in the Outrigger Waikiki. It was a pretty nice hotel and I felt like there was a decent amount of stuff nearby.

i was just in kauai for 7 nights on my honeymoon. While you are there, you MUST, MUST, MUST go on a hike. The best hike i've ever been on. Its on the north side of the island, past princeville. Its 2 miles to a secluded beach (only access is by hiking). Then its another 2 miles to a HUGE waterfall with a pool you can swim in. Its hot as hell, but great.
if u have more questions about kauai, pm me

Thanks. I booked a night at the Outrigger in a Partial Oceanfront room. Not too bad at $29 for the night. Let's get a shout out for Scarpozzi the Ferengi!!!!
