most of this stuff comes with the installation cd,
just do the defualt install, that oughta keep you busy enough...

And yeah dont get excited too much, linux is useless for all-around mutimedia machines IMHO

Exactly Halik But the problem is there are like 2000 apps!!! How the heck to decide which are worth a damn for someone who acctually has to do some work? Takes forever to wade though the crap.

GIMP

4. Web browser?

Mozilla for GUI / Lynx for console

5. FTP client?

My ex-roomate worked on an FTP client called DPS-FTP. I liked it. It still might be packaged. He quit because he said that another client could do what he set out to do. I think it was gFTP

6. Telnet?

ssh

7. Image Viewing?

Electric Eyes

8. Desktop publishing?

OpenOffice

And finally
What games are really cool?

UT, Doom X, Quake X.

I've heard WINE works well.

Lots of programs will come free on the disk, more than you could possibly count actually. Linux is a great OS, and you can spend hours trying out all of its features.

You can get the reader, I dont know what else they have available, but I hear they have one of them thar website thingies.

Also, check freshmeat.net. It has a searchable database of plenty of software for Linux/BSD/Unix/other Unix-like systems. google.com/linux is also an invaluable source.

No problem.

Learning curve will be big enough, for me at least, just familiarizing myself with the OS. Just wanted to know the standard apps so I could jump right in and be semi-productive since it's on the clock learning:)

Wrong! You are telnetting because your admin is stuck in the past. Demand ssh! :)

I use crt telnet now with the ssh2 protocol
:p

Try mutt. You might like it.

You should hit your admin up for ssh, or maybe show him *why* he should install ssh ;)

ssh != telnet
ssh is not based off of telnet (its based off of rsh :p)

:)

If you are using ssh you are using ssh. If you want an ssh ap, use OpenSSH for a free ssh client/server or SSH for a commercial application.

You will get varying answers for many of your questions. Some of the apps I mentioned are not the same as the ones mentioned by Chaotic42.

There are LOADS of apps for everything you mentioned... the thing is, we all have our own favorites... therfore answers will differ, and after you make your mind up when trying different apps, so will your answers...

Freedom of choice comes with a price...

Ehhhh... maybe that is all you need, but if you would have read his post at all, you would see that NONE of those installs would get him what he needs...

The best interface for what? to me it just seems lika a buggy standard interface for a less-configurable kernel... in other words.. it is the worst of both worlds...

BS, Nano can do word processing, write yourself a perl dictionary parsers and match up words sh!t it turns into a word proceesor with spell check, you can do spreadsheets in MySQL, you don't need telnet in linux. sorry can't help him with console based desktop publishing, but I direct back to nano and ASCII art, games are a friggin waste of time. so I answered most of his question. stupid linuxians don't know their ass from a hole in the ground.

LOL, well, actually, if you think about it, he wouldn't need any of the apps you mentioned either... he could just write his own apps in C...

So there!
