I'm told that there is a gay handshake?

I never knew this, but here's the background.

Tonight was the Oscar's as you all know, and in San Francisco, there's an event called Academy of Friends. It's a gala where SF's elite come and gather to fundraise to fight against AIDS while watching the academy awards. Needless to say, there will be plenty of homosexuals in a place like SF and for a cause like AIDS. I volunteered there last year and I decided to go again this year.

So I was selling raffle tickets with my friend and he approaches a man and asks if he would like to purchase raffle tickets. The man says "No, but I would like to get to know you." He introduced himself and my friend did too and the two shook hands. Then the man said "Wait, you're straight?" My friend replied yes, and the man walked away. Well that was awkward.

My friend explained to me that gays shake hands differently. That I did not know, and I thought a handshake was a handshake.

Later on I was finished with my shift so I started walking through the gala as well. I offered to take a picture for two couples who were clearly too drunk and were stumbling around. Anyways, one guy shook my hand. I was used to giving firm handshakes like I give at career fairs and what not, and somehow I noticed as if he was grabbing just my fingers and not the entire hand like in a handshake.

Anyways, the event was fun and the dancing afterwards is definitely a fun atmosphere. Unfortunately, I have some work due tomorrow so I wasn't able to stay too late for the afterparty.

I dunno, someone care to explain?

that is more than a bit ridiculous. I've never noticed a specifically gay handshake. my theory is some straight guys feel the need to apply excessive pressure when shaking another man's hand, in order to convey that they are 'tough'. maybe the gay guy thought, "Why the hell is this guy crushing the bones in my hand? Oh, he might be straight.."

anyway, you are nice for volunteering to sell raffle tickets, good on you :)

well. to be fair, we are always taught to give "firm" handshakes to convey confidence.

That's the way I hear it, too. Maybe it's a vast homophobic conspiracy! AHHHHHHH!

If I were in SF at an AIDS fundraiser, you better believe I wouldn't be giving any limp handshakes! But I've never heard of a special handshake from my gay friends. Of course, I don't live anywhere near SF...I suppose it would make a lot more sense in SF than in most places, eh?

I hate when people give limp handshakes, as it makes me think they're shifty weasles who are not worthy of respect. Silly, I know, but it's there.

Dude I had some guy, can't remember who, give me the "finger" handshake a month or two ago. Had no idea what the heck he was doing at the time. I wonder...

Um, that wasn't his finger....

On the other hand, congrats, you discovered the gay handshake.

what do you call the handshake when one person curls one of their fingers inside and scratches the palm of the other person? is that what you're asking about?
