I'm tired of BF2's awful performance. Fixed.

I'm gonna post one last time to see if I can fix it. If I can't, I'll sell it.

Here's the story. Just reformatted last week cause I installed new mobo/CPU. BF2 has patch 1.02. Using cats 5.8. Vsync is on.

1024x768 with settings on high. get a lot of slow down with explosions and people on a 32man server. Unplayable and I died many times because of it. don't know framerate.

1280x1024 with settings on high. average of 20fps. Just looking around. No battle or anything.

1280x1024 with settings on medium. average 28fps. Some battle, not heavy, running around.

This is horse crap with a x800Pro.

its your card man...maybe its about time you realized you should be playing on medium or low?

System in sig gets me about 80-85fps average according to FRAPS @ 1280x1024 medium settings, 4x/16x AA/AF

However because I have 1GB of RAM, the game stutters a bit, are you sure that is not what you are experiencing?

I hear that FEAR will require 2GB for minimal disk thrashing. So maybe 2GB will become the norm faster than we realize.

VIAN, I don't know that an X800pro is THAT much slower than a X800XL. It seems a little low. Monitor your hard drive activity LED and see if there is some thrashing going on.

FEAR brings my system to it's knees @ 1280x1024x32 4x/16x AA/AF

The X800XL is faster than the X800Pro, but not by as much as you are describing with AA/AF off. IF you have AA/AF on, then try disabling it to see if that helps. Remember X800Pro only has 12 pipes compared to the XL's 16 pipes. Makes a big difference when using AA

I wouldn't say BF2 runs good, but is is definitely playable. I play on 1024x768, mid detail level, no AA/AF of course. On a 32+ player server it runs all right. Not that smooth (and it looks like utter crap), but it doesn't bog down to the point where I am dying due to sluggish performance, not at all. And this is on a Barton 2.2ghz, 1GB ram, 9800 Pro, which is MUCH slower than your system.

I'm sure. Rig in sig. I know the x800 Pro about equal to the XL and you are getting way better performance than me.

AA is off. Will check harddisk. AA is more about Bandwidth, as opposed to AF, which is more about GPU speed.

I can play it at 1024*768 with all details set to medium except for either lighting or shadows is turned off, same with dynamic shadows/lighting and i have 2xAA on. It never dips below 45 FPS except on servers with more then 40 people, then it starts to chug because i only have 512 MB of memory. (This is with the system in my sig) So, try to put most of the settings on medium, none high and try it.

check temps, make sure your CPU is not throttling.

Other than that, I dunno. Roll back to 5.7 Cats, 5.8s lowered my performance. Also check for spyware/adware.

You definately should not be getting 28fps with that rig when I am getting 85fps with 4xAA.

What are you 3dmark scores like? CS:S stress test?

that sounds like something wrong to me; my rig below hasn't had a single problem running @ 1650x1080 since i doubled up on the memory; all the details are maxed (Or near i think).

Set audio quality to Medium and make sure it is on software rather than hardware.

-You absolutely can't run the game on High settings with that vid card, and probably not Medium either (maybe some settings on medium).
-Due to the fact that you only have 1GB or RAM your game play may be jiggy for the first few minutes in the game, after that any jiggy-ness is less likely RAM related.
-As a general rule start with very low settings and work your way up.
-You should only run at the LCDs native resolution (1280x1024). It will look like $hit in any other resolution. If you want to use 800x600 res, just to see if the vid card runs better, fine; but your not gonna like the way it looks.
-Don't use AA or AF. turn them off. Your vid card can't take it.
-Play in 16 player maps for testing.
-Shadows and lighting should be set to Off or Low. Your vid card can't take it.
-Do a google search for BF2 Tweakguides, this will give you an idea of which settings are the most taxing on your system and how to get the most out of your card. You'll likely end up with a mixture of settings, not a pre-set LOW,MED,HIGH.
-the bottom line: it's your video card and ram. Get 2GB of RAM and at least a 16 pipe video card (maybe the 800XL). The most important of these is vid card for high quality gaming.
-Personally I'd say you should sacrifice high quality graphics for higher frame rates. Ideally, your average frames should be running in the 60-70 range. anything less and you might not be killing as much as you could. It's the kind of thing where you think 40-50 is fine (no jiggy-ness), but the guys running 80-100 frames are getting twice as many glimpses of you and will have more kills.... although if you suck, nothing will help but more practice.
Good luck.

harddisk light blinks once every few seconds, looks normal.

Have you tried unlocking the pipelines in your pro ?
I'm gonna forget you said that.

Set audio quality to Medium and make sure it is on software rather than hardware.
But I have a Hardware sound device. That shouldn't matter. That's only for those that have onboard sound.

Yes it can, I know the video card can take it. Go look at benches. I've also experienced better performance on a 6600GT that I had installed previously. This card CAN take it.

Ok thanks for the helpful input mr.6800GT Ultra....your card is very comparable to the x800 pro.

2GB of RAM shouldn't be the problem either. BF2 leaves me with about 20MB of RAM left on a 32man server. That's not that bad.

So I rolled back to 5.7 and my performance was much better. Although it might be because Vsync is off. I cannot turn it back on to tell for sure if it was just the drivers or Vsync. Anyway, not gonna install 5.8 to find out. Just gonna have fun with 5.7.

1280x1024 with settings on High. average of 50+fps

You will get this with any video card. Unfortunately BF2 was released sooner than it should have been and needs at least 2-3 optimization patches before it runs right (similar to BF1942 back in the day). I have a 7800 GTX clocked at 490/1350 and I still drop down to 30-35 fps quite often in-game with most settings on medium.

My system details:

A64 3000+ Winchester @ 2.6 GHz
2 GB Crucial PC 3200
DFI Lanparty NF4 SLI-DR
Leadtek 7800 GTX flashed to 490/1350

Vid card and CPU are on water cooling so they never throttle due to heat or anything like that. Every other game runs great, it's just BF2 that runs like ass. FEAR was no problem to handle.

I get the other way around... Once I am in the game, BF2 runs perfect and high settings. But F.E.A.R. is another story... I guess mileage may vary? Your system setup is almost indenticle mine... 2GB ram, 3500 XP @ 2.53 Ghz, 7800 GTX... I must admit, I am perplexed that your system is doing the opposite of mine. I am running 77.77 Forware drivers.

I am pretty sure it's your RAM. You need 2gb (since you want dual channel) to run BF2 properly at this point since it takes up so many system resources. My computer lags as well and I still get the same jagged gameplay regardless of my video settings.

I got the opposite as well. BF2 runs smooth as can be with 1GB RAM, but FEAR brought my system to its knees.

Next time you're in BF 2, bring down your console and type renderer.drawfps 1 and keep an eye on your FPS. I guarantee you that you will hit 35-40 fps quite often.

While I'm sure your "jigginess" you are referring to can be issues other than RAM, if it is a RAM issue it can and will occur at various points of the game, not just in the first few minutes.

Some of your statements about his card are pretty much false. There are several settings that can and should be on high, and some that really have little to no impact on gameplay but hit performance in a big way that should be dialed down. You need a little more eduaction in tweaking BF2 so you won't make such blanket statements. Anyway that si not what the thread is about, I just wanted to point that out. If anyone is interested in an optimization guide let me know and I can throw it up on my server for perusing.

x800XL is what I have and it's not that much faster than an x800Pro.

Running 1600x1200 with 4AA and 4AF, all settings on high and it's running smoothly, about 40-50FPS

bf2 runs great on my comp..Don't know what your problem is.

a64 3200 NC at 2.55ghz
9800pro at xt speeds
1 gig of mushkin value

I run it at 1024x768 everything medium with 2x aa and I get 40-70 fps. I also get the occasional drop of fps to around 25 but thats only in big firefights Doesnt stutter a bit on 64 man servers.
