I'm thinking about getting a tattoo

I've decided that I'm going to get a tattoo, this will be my first. I think it's going on the top of my foot, but everyone keeps telling me that is going to hurt terribly. I have bony feet so I guess I'll just have to get a nice buzz or something going before I go in and man up.

I've been sitting around thinking of ideas, and so far my best one is a seagull (possibly with aviator goggles on). It is in reference to the book Jonathan Livingston Seagull, which is one of my favorite books. If not that then I am going to come up with some kind of nice design, probably utilizing a tree in it. I don't mean some anorexic tree that most people draw where it is just the trunk and branches (like 4 branches usually lol) and no leaves but a for real tree such as this. Possibly maybe even something inspired by tibet and buddism.

I've been browsing deviantart looking through their tattoos and I've come to the conclusion that 99% of the people that get tattoos have no inspiration and completely lack creativity. They are all either "tribal", skulls, flags, kanji, celtic, or something equally boring and overused and unispired. Whatever I get on me I want to be completely original (and I don't mean come up with a new tribal design, because that is not original in the least) and creative. It's also gonna be designed by me, so what I have is just my own creation. I can definitely draw with the best of em and have 3 years of graphic design under my belt so generating the imagery won't be the problem, I just have to decide on what I want to get.

Welp, that's my new grand idea and goal. I'll post pics whenever I get whatever it is I'm getting done. And have any of you ever had a tat on the top of your foot? I'm curious as to just how much it really does hurt.

I know a couple females with tats on their feet but no males. I do agree with you that it is stupid to go to a shop and "pick something on page 3".

If you really must get tatooed then at least pick something that will have meaning as long as you live; not just a reminder of drunken decision.

I think you should have the idea even before deciding to get a tatto. Doing it the other way doesn't really make much difference, you're just shopping on the internet rather than at the store.

For something that permanent, I'd wait till the right thing hits me, rather trying to find the right idea now, because i want the tattoo tomorrow.

Well the right thing hit me, and the right thing is just a badass design. And by design I don't mean little squiqqles, but that tree thing for instance that I linked to in my original post. Then I came up with Jonathan Livingston, and right now I think a seagull would be awesome on the top of my foot. And if people ask why a seagull, I could actually tell them. Read the book, excellent meaningful story. One of if not my favorite books ever.

Don't worry about the pain. Anywhere you get a tatt will hurt somewhat. From what i've heard the worst is your belly. I have one on my right arm that didn't hurt until they got to the upper portion where the arm connects into the shoulder.

I'm indecisive on my next tatt. One day I want to get a portrait of my older sister. She was pretty much my Mom while my sisters' and I were growing up. To this day she's always there for me when I need her, and i'm 30.

I like the idea of getting a scroll on my back with "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" in tagalog.

This is pretty much what I was going to say. If you're going to get one, and just don't know what to get yet, you may regret it. If you see or imagine and a design, and then think it would cool as a tatoo, then go right ahead.

I've only got 2 tats right now, even though I'd like more. But so far, I've only had two that I really wanted. When something hits me as the right design, I'll get another.

Howbout a heart with an arrow through it surrounded by a Celtic knot and some Chinese characters, with the word "TRENDY" in big capital letters? 🙂

TRENDY has to be spelled in kanji.

I've wanted to get one on my shoulder for a while...but when I do it I'm going to do it right (pay $500+ for a top notch guy to do it)

My requirements:
-still works if it stretches/wrinkles
-no definite boundries...when skin ends and tatoo starts should be hard to tell.

Well a friend of mine is a tattoo artist (what I am aspiring to become, and I just got back frrom the pub so if I mispell any words please excuse me) and he has already agreed to do anything I want for super cheap. Cost of ink basically. I think I am pretty much set on the seagull, now I just have to draw it. I have the day off tomorrow so I might do it then, who knows. When I get it inked is another story.

why would you put your tattoo on top of your foot?
especially if it is going to mean that much to you
and if you really want to get ideas of what you can do ,pick up a tattoo magazine or 2 or 3
OR go to a tattoo shop and talk to them about it
talk to people who HAVE tattoo,s that are excellent quality and find out where they got them done

oh ya NO decent tattoo shop will ink you if your drunk

Well my friend (who is a great tattoo artist, many of my friends have tattoos from him which are badass) is going to do it, and his brain is so fried from acid and such that he understands and he will let me eat some oxycontin beforehand and won't care. And why on top of my foot, I'm not sure. If I ever feel down and start looking at the ground I'll see Jonathan Livingston, and if you read the book you will understand. Such an uplifting book.

It was a reference to the best elementary school book series ever of which many can not comprehend, mortal.

I think it's great that Calvin didn't give a flying f*ck about what others thought. A true role model, that man.
