The title says it all. Dell, Toshiba, IBM, they all want me to pay for Windows. I'd rather just not get Windows and bump the memory up. Are there any places that sell laptops (in the <$1200 area) without Windows?

Sorry, I refuse to bid on ebay. If I'm going to buy something, I'm going to buy something, not compete for the right to buy it.

Thanks for the reply though :)

There are plenty of "buy it now" prices and ebay stores from sellers where you do not have to bid and can buy outright.

i've never seen a laptop for sale without OS software on it, at least not from any dealer's that i would remotely trust.

just like its almost impossible to buy a Dell or HP or Mac without OS software on it, thats just the way the business works.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. Oh well, I can get XP Pro, put it on my dual system, and put XP Home that's on my dual system *now* and put it on the laptop. If I have to pay for it, I'm going to use it I guess.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

How to get a laptop without WIndows:

1) Buy a laptop.
2) Insert boot disk and turn laptop on.
3) Type FDISK.
4) Select Y to treat all sectors as large.
5) Got to menu 3.
6) Select option 1 to delete primary partition.
7) Delete any secondary partitions.
8) Select menu 1 and create a primary partition using all available disk space.
9) Reboot, then install whatever hacked OS you want to use, ya geek :D

Actually, I think there's something in the license agreement for Windows saying you can be reimbursed if you return your license and all disks containing the operating system. Get a hold of one and read it over (and good luck doing that :) ). Otherwise, EBay is your friend. Go to one of the IBM or Dell stores and get a "Buy it now" item.

That would require me using DOS. I'd have to type out FDISK instead of just hitting F-D-<tab>.

I'm just not ready to put that much effort into it....

;)

Sorry, I'm tired. I've been at work since midnight. I woke up at noon yesterday, and wanted to go to sleep at 7, but Gandhi was on the History Channel. How could I resist?!?

Well, you can go to www.powernotebooks.com. They have a pretty good rating on resellerratings and you can get a notebook without an OS. I'm not endorsing them or anything as I have never purchased from them. So its your call.

IBM offers Caldera Linux on its A-Series ThinkPads, or at least it did when I purchased mine. (I'm not entirely sure about the other lines of ThinkPads.) If you call IBM, I'm fairly sure that they have some sort of option for a Linux preload. I don't know of anyone who will ship an empty laptop though.

I bought a brand new laptop at a retail store last weekend, and it didn't come with windows on it. It's not like it was hard to find.

I'm not adverse to buying a mac, but I don't think that I can justify the price/performance of one.

Good point. If you don't like Windows, and want a *NIX-based OS installed, why not just get a Mac?

I have been told by a representative from CTL that they will be willing to sell their laptops, without windows installed...
their site is
http://www.ctlcorp.com/

although I'd imagine you'd have to call and request them to not put windows on
they basically told me that in order to sell them with windows, they are required to put windows on all their systems as default.... but they can make exceptions...
you just lose basically any software tech support, which is to be expected

You can't, the way I see it you have 3 options:

1) Buy an HP, Compaq, Sony, Toshiba, IBM, Dell laptop with Windows already installed and get over it.
2) Buy a no-name brand for about the same price but WITHOUT paying for Windows, of course it will be like 9 pounds and will break within a year but damn you saved $100 by not paying for Windows. Bad idea.
3) Buy an Apple iBook or PowerBook.

Laptops are getting cheaper and cheaper. In the past 3 weeks I've seen about 4 Hot Deals with laptops costing under $1,200 WITH Windows installed.

i think he's asking for no OS, to save money (and put it towards RAM or other options).....not so much about disliking Windows. i could be wrong, though.

Yup. If I really wanted Windows, I could put my old Win98 installation on the laptop. Windows XP would be a waste of $100.

I'd rather put that to getting more memory or a bigger screen.

Some newer laptops do not support Windows 9x. You can't get win9x drivers for the Dell Inspiron 8200.
