I don't think I've ever seen the map that full. Each of those represent a power outage. The hat means a crew is on site working on it.

Southern Ontario and some parts of Quebec got hit pretty hard by a storm.

I worked 9ish hours overtime coordinating techs with generators to keep all the affected CO's running in Quebec. At one point there was about 50 sites without power.

It was crazy windy yesterday for sure. Some 100,000 people were still without power when I left work last night.

I was working right in that coffin shaped green spot yesterday. Can confirm it was really windy and there was no power.

That's why linemen make over $100,000 per year...they work a shit-ton of overtime on top of already good wages.

yes.

did you know the sky is blue?

Are you sure about that...or does it merely appear to be blue? :hmm:

I worked for an electrical utility in the 90's. MOST of the linemen were making over $100K back then...and their hourly wages have doubled since then.

My ex's father was used to be a lineman, then he got "promoted" to a desk job. He brought home less money after the promotion...

We got hit with some massive wind here too, I lost power at work and got to go home early. Many lights out on the way home, and then I came home to this:

Landlord said he would come over with a chainsaw, got there and saw how big it was. Decided to hire professionals...

My brother is one. $27 a hour. And yeah when a storm hits they make some money. Definitely not for everyone though. Sitting in a bucket while it's blizzard conditions out trying not to get fried by electric lines. He definitely earns it.

I have a friend who's a lineman here in the Tampa Bay area. They pay you a lot, but there's definitely huge risks involved. You're expected to work as necessary (which means lot of OT usually), and if you don't, they'll "find someone who will" if you catch my drift. It can also be very, very dangerous. Thankfully we don't have to deal with blizzard conditions down here, but there's a lot of ground to cover, so long hours are required.

With that said, he makes a pretty darn good living doing it and just bought a house.

Careful saying that too loud around here, people will bitch that no wonder their power bills are too high and they should only be making a quarter to half that. ATOT logic is: I should be getting paid the most for doing the least, my costs should be the lowest and everyone else should eat the overruns...

Seriously? I would have done it myself...of course, I grew up on a farm.;)

well it is easy on your body if you write code

not so easy on your mind though

Quite the opposite...sitting around all the time is awful on your body. In contrast, working outdoors will keep you healthy, happy, and sane.

100k to write code?! For who, CGI? lol. Those guys get paid by the line of code.

As for linemen and tree crews making 100k, I say good for them because they earn it, unlike lot of other people who make 100k pushing a pencil all day. These guys are pushing logs that can make 10,000 pencils. :p

I'm just glad I live in one of the most sheltered areas in Ontario... Snow storm, wind storm? We get a breeze. We call in the army for about a foot of snow. Boo ya!
