i am considering buying a new cpu/board. i am also leaning toward the new thunderbird's from amd. i know spit about amd chips, other than i once owned a k6 and it su__d. so which thunderbirds need the new ddr ram, and is it that much more expensive than 133 sdram? is the perf of the ddr ram that much better? i currently have a 566@850 so i guess any thunderbird will be a step up.

what's the best combo now for the money (athlon 900, 1ghz, 1.33ghz, ???
what is a good chipset for amd. via? amd's 760?

as you can probably tell, and as i stated above, i know nothing about amd products.
thanks for the help.

For my money I'd say the Athalon 1.2GHz. They are cheap, come unlockes for easy overclocking and people are getting great results with them (1400+ MHz in many cases).

The motherboard of choice on these forums seems to be the Epox 8K7A. It's based on AMD's 760 chipset which again is a favorite of these boards.

As far as DDR ram goes there is some performance increase but it's not a huge difference. However, you'll pretty much need DDR to use the newer motherboards.

Tbirds themselves do not require DDR RAM. Depends on the motherboard you go with. From what I've heard, DDR should give you some where around a 10% performance increase.

As far as mobos and chipsets, via's kt133a is good, but some people experience glitches and conflicts, especially when using SB Live! cards. I think these issues might have been resolved in recent bios updates. I myself have the Abit KT7A-RAID and a SB Live! Value and have never had any problems.

Asus A7V is another good Via (SDRAM) motherboard. For DDR mobos, I've Epox, MSI and Iwill have good boards.

The Athlon 1.2Ghz is definately the best deal.
At [L=TCWO.COM]http://www.tcwo.com[L] has it for $96 whereas the 1.3Ghz is $137. Quite a jump for only 100Mhz.
I use SDRAM in my machine, but I have a friend that has DDR and I've not noticed much of a difference between my 256 SDRAM and his 256 DDR Ram, we both have 1Ghz machines.

You can get the 1.33 Ghz from pcboost for $129.00 And thats 133 mhz plus you can pick up 256 MB of DDR Pc 2100 from crucial for like 44.99 shipping and free 2 day express shipping !plus i heard AMD slashed thier prices this monday so i would expect a drop later this week ! but if i was going to overclock i would go with the 1.2 can't beat it for that price 1.4 is way out of the park .
