Im sure it's a simple problem...I just can't get my mind to work...

Brand new yesterday...8 port Linksys router hooked up to cable connection. RJ-45 in the walls and into the PC's. I've got Win2000 sp2, and there is another thats just Win98SE. Both have file/printer sharing and are in the "workgroup" workgroup. As I understand it, we should be able to see eachother in network neighborhood (or my network places in Win2k). Well, I can. The Win98 box has C:\ and a printer set to share w/o a pw (just for now). When I go to the workgroup, I can see his box and mine, but I can go no further into the other PC...why? I feel like an idiot cuz I'm sure I'm missing something simple and I'm not even new at this. But I've very tired and have no Pepsi to revive me. Help.

nevermind - i was gonna say did u remember to check the box that says "enable other users to see my files" under File and Print Sharing in your Network Properties and did u share something on the other box (right-click, Sharing...)

I think NT has to have some kind of a login to share the files. Not 100% sure about that though. Do you have a folder shared on the NT box? If not you cant go any farther.

Ok..I just shared a folder on the Win2k box (which I don't want to do) and still no go...

You need to create an account on the 2000 box and then login to the 98 box with that account. Otherwise 2000 won't recognize the user and you won't be able to get through the securty settings of the 2000 box.

You can also assign the everyone permission to the drive. The problem with that is other people might be able acces the drive from the outside. Create a user account like bob on the Win98 machine with a password 123. Go to the Windows 2000 machine and create the same account, assign the account permissions to the drives or files you wish to share.

The printer is on the Win98 machine...I don't want to share and of the Win2000 files. Will I still need to create the account?

Yes, you can decide what you want to share by right clicking/properties/share on the drive, file or printer and enabling sharing.

Everyone will just give permissions to users created. Enabling the guest account will allow any user on the LAN to get to shares. Bad idea though.

Ok...Im *NOT* sharing anything on the Windows 2000 computer. I only tried that to see if it would work. I only want the printer from the Windows 98 machine, and maybe that hard drive, but really I'm only after the printer.

Ok...I created an account on the Win2k box the same name and pw as the login on the Win98 box. No go. I logged in on both computers as the new account and my regular one but still no share.

Silly question, but do you have the same protocol installed and set as the default? If you're confident everything else is right, install NetBEUI on both boxes, make it the default protocol for the boxes. See if that does anything for you.

You really had something with the user account on the windows 2000 box, but that's only part of the equation. Just personal preference, but I do not like netbeui over tcp (too chatty). Yes, you need to have rights to see that drive letter (or folder) if logging in from a win98 machine. Also, you will want to make sure you do not have the Highly secure workstation security template on the 2k box, as it is not backward compatible w/98. Finally, I have found that removing the default share (C$) on the W2k machine will help you find the drive. That reminds me, if the sharename ends with a $, you will not see it (hidden share). Create a DOS friendly sharename for what you want, and that should work. If you already log into the W98 machine with a specific username, make sure you have the same password on the W2k box. Sorry this is rambling, but I have been there too many times before. It's a pain in the rear end!!

Ok...now it works, but AAAARRRGHH I DON'T LIKE NETBEUI.

I mean it's a nice protocol and everything, but it is noisy and will slow down network performance...sigh...oh well guess you can't have everything,
