I'm supposed to have USB 2 but see signs I don't

I recently bought my first flash drive (PNY 256MB). When I insert it in a USB port on front of my computer, I get a message saying this device will perform faster if I connect it to a Hi-speed USB 2.0 port. I got the manual for my ECS K7S5A PRO motherboard and searched for info on USB specs. As I understand it, the ports on back of my computer should be USB 2.0, but the ones on front are USB 1.1. So, I inserted the flash drive in a port on back of my computer and I got the same message.

So, this seems to indicate none of my USB ports function at the USB 2.0 standard. I can still use the flash drive; I can simply close the message and go on and use it. Still, I'm wondering why I get this message when I use a back port.

check in system hardware........if it says somethin like enhanced USB controller...then u have usb2.0.........otherwise u may need to load some drivers??.btw which OS u r usin?

Win XP PRO, SP2. Out of 11 items shown under USB controllers in Device Manager, one is labeled "VIA USB Enhance Host Controller." None of the others have the word "Enhanced". Perhaps I should try each port and see whether I get the message with all of them.

as long as there is an entry sayin "enhanced controller" , u have usb2.0.........i never heard of mbd havin some ports as 2.0 and some as 1.0.........so all of them have to be either 1.0 or 2.0

Ah but we are talking about ECS here. I do believe they have boards with some 1.1 and some 2.0 ports. I believe the board in question actually has (6) 1.1 ports and (4) 2.0 ports.

It's possible that the enhanced controller is active on the mobo, but not actually hooked up to any of the ports on the case. So you'd see the enhanced controller in device manager, but not actually have any useable 2.0 ports. He could have just the (6) 1.1 ports hooked up.

In other words, the 2.0 connector is sitting empty on the mobo.

Sounds right on target. I've seen older boards with both 1.1 and 2.0 on them. Makes you wonder what they were thinking.

You're right; I can confirm that; see
K7S5A Pro

I installed the motherboard back in March and had to connnect the USB wires. I don't recall the details of that now, but I could review it. I have two other devices, a printer and an APC UPS, connected to USB ports but I believe neither of them requires USB 2.0. I also have a digital camera but it, too, only requires USB 1.1. So, this issue has not arisen before now.

I don't view as a major problem since the flash drive works; I simply have to clear the message when I first insert it. Still, would be nice to know for a fact whether any of my USB ports are functioning at 2.0. The flash drive supposedly requires USB 2.0, so that fact also makes this a little unclear. However, the message displayed does say it will work but at a slower speed. So, apparently, it's just throttling down to USB 1.1.

Is it possible the enhanced controller has a USB 1.1 device installed in it, causing the USB 2.0 controller to act like a 1.1? I was thinking that if it has a 1.1 device in it it will reduce all its ports to 1.1..and thus Windows sees it as a 2.0 device plugged into a 1.1 port?. just a thought.
