So I routinely scan my system with adaware, and everytime I've done so for the past year or so I've never gotten any infections.

Today though I notice my computer acting funcky so I download Spyware Doctor.

I run it, and after about 10 minutes I find..

2188 infections

I remove them all, reboot, and now it's doing another scan..and at 74% completion there's another 283 found so far.

I don't have any anti spyware, but I heard spybot had agreements with spyware people to look over certain spyware.

If I was going to get one, it would probably be ad-aware tho.

boot in safe mode and scan with Ad-Aware, Spybot, MS AntiSpyware Beta, AVG Antivirus and anything else you have on hand. It should all go away. Then go buy Norton Internet Security 2005 or '06. Never depend on one spyware scanner to find it all.

Some anti-spyware programs are very shoddy and will generate a bunch of false positives. Some actually delete system files. I don't know about Spyware Doctor but I'd beware if there is that much discrepancy between it and AdAware.

Bingo.

I work at my college as a software tech.

I run adaware, anti-spyware, spybot, spyware doctor, hijack this and various other programs depending on the specific problem. I run all of them, except for hijackthis in safe mode (with networking to allow for easy updating).

Be careful with hijack this, because you can royally fvck up your system by going delete-crazy.

I've found with Ad-aware is that the software typically removes just enough of the spyware so it is completely disabled, but does not totally clean it out. Like it may leave the spyware's log files, or the directory listing under "program files", which the other anti-spyware software pick up on and claim it's a threat.

Also, make sure you have the most recent version of ad-aware. Older versions of ad-aware do not receive the newest definition files through the in-software updating tool.
