I'm stumped

Alright. I'm baffled and upset=/

Bought the 8800GT a few weeks ago. Worked in my am2 rig fine. So I get my new mobo, ram and cpu in. I install everything. Powers up fine. Immediately I overclock it to 2.8ghz(from the 1.6ghz stock) and install Vista. Doesn't miss a lick. I install TF2, Crysis demo and all my regular apps. I start overclocking more. I get up to 3.0 and leave it. Never went over 60C under load. I have a huge thermaltake HS/F.

Well last night I downloaded some drivers for a PC I'm working on and then turned it off. I come back this evening having not touched it since last night and turn it on. I wait and wait and wait. No POST. I turn off the PSU switch and turn it back on. No POST. I go "wtf".

I take the case off and clear the CMOS. Put the pin back on and try again. No POST. I take one stick of ram out. No POST. I take all my kingston N5 ram out and throw in a Crucial DDR2 1GB stick and try. No POST. I take every part out of my case and lay it on the floor only having the 8800GT installed. No POST.

I took the CMOS battery out as well and no luck.

I clearly haven't the slightest clue what's going on. I never had any high temps. It froze a few times in Crysis while trying different FSB settings. OC'd the 8800GT to 690/1990 but never had problems, even with it installed in my AM2 rig.

Surely I didn't fry something? If so, HOW? It worked fine last night. I shut it down and now it won't POST. Everything spins up like it's working normally but nothing. I've tried holding insert down too.

The PSU has never given me one problem.

Can anyone help me?:(

Assuming you have hardwood or tile floors in your house, you need to buy a real power supply. If you don't have hardwood or tile, this is most likely your problem:

I take every part out of my case and lay it on the floor only having the 8800GT installed.

I'm afraid I don't understand..?

The PSU has never given me a problem. It's been through 3 different rigs I've had in the past. I don't understand why it just stopped working for no reason.

Also FWIW I noticed after doing little troubleshooting prior to posting this thread I never saw the molex connector that is located by the pci-e slot. I connected a molex connector when I saw it but with still no luck.

Take the MB outside the case and put it on the shipping box. Strip it bare. Install only the CPU, GPU, mouse, keyboard, and one Kingston N5 RAM. Remove battery and place CMOS jumper in clear position. Wait 1/2 hour. Put back battery and CMOS jumper. Connect 24/20 and 8/4 pin power plugs. Connect extra power to GPU as needed. Connect PSU to the wall. Short the two power pins on the MB. If PC will not POST, then try the other Kingston RAM. Also try another GPU.

Failure to POST may be due to a bad PSU.

Trying now.

I don't see what would make the PSU suddenly die. FWIW, I let it run for a few minutes and felt the bottom of the mobo. The only part that is a little warm is under the northbrige chipset.

The HS/F or even underneath the mobo where the CPU is cold.

Will update shortly.

TIA

As I type this the board is on the box it came in. CMOS battery is out. CMOS is set of pins 2-3. The PSU isn't connected in any way to the motherboard.

Still no luck. Guess I'll go to best buy tomorrow and grab a cheap pci-e card and PSU.

Surely Iaggagatehahaeaeth....

Err wait...

I followed your steps Serp. I stuck the other stick of kingston in. Powered it on. While I was typing above the monitor light clicked on(showed green instead of orange) for a few seconds then clicked off.

wtf?
I'll keep trying a few more times.

Sigh.

Kept trying to no avail. I did notice that after the notorious second start the LEDs for num lock, caps lock, etc flash on for a second.

Grrrrr

Don't think you have a bad CPU. RAMs should be okay. GPU should be okay. I'd say your PSU is toast. Not sure if this problem has damaged the MB. Get Antec Earthwatts 500 from Staples. You can return the PSU if it doesn't fix the boot issue.

Can a PSU be fried even though it lights up and sounds like it normally does?

Yup. Startup is very stressful for a PSU. A lot of in-rush current needed to POST a modern board. A common failure mode for MB is no POST out of the box. Since you were able to overclock the CPU, I suspect the MB is okay. The big unknown is the PSU and the components connected to the PSU if it goes south.

Antec Earthwatts 430/500 can be found for $30 AR. Have never tested Rosewill PSU.

Grabbed a 500w antec and 800GT. It turned out to be the 8800GT=/

Have no idea why really. I had it 690/1990 since I got it. Ran 3dmark06 fine every time.

Weird.

You didn't try posting without the 8800gt ? What about your old pci-e videocard you had prior to buying the 8800gt ? Oh well, if everything works fine now then it's cool. I suggest leaving the ram at 1900, instead of 1990. I bet you had it at 1990 because you read about people saying the videocard might not survive for long if you oc-ed the ram to 2000mhz.

But the board didn't boot with the other GPU, correct?

Have you tried the card in another computer? Did you ever over clock the card? What brand is it? I assume since it's an 8800GT, you just purchased it so it should be covered under warranty.
