I'm stumped. What monitor would you buy?

So Im stuck I plan on buying a 1080p 144hz monitor, and I cant decide between these two:

The only relevant differences between these two cards are as follows:

-Acer monitor uses ~20 less watts during typical use than the Asus one.
-Acer monitor has no Display Port.
-Acer monitor uses Analog RGB, while the Asus monitor uses "digital".

Which would you recommend, and why?

Quick attempt to be helpful (before doing the "new stuff is coming soon" thing):
1) If you want to hook up old PCs/laptops which need analog then you have to get the Acer.
2) Display Port is getting more & more useful. Maybe you won't need it... but it's a nice option.
3) The ASUS' stand looks more useful.

But I wouldn't buy either of those unless I needed too. Mine usually last years and variable refresh rate monitors are coming soon.

I would suggest all digital signals would be comparable.

OK let me be clear then.

Let us say that a person is a gamer and they want to play at 1080p with good signal quality.

Your video card is a AMD R280x 3GB (or any card with a mini display port included).

Your monitor is a 23 inch Asus PA238Q IPS

The monitor has slots for Displayport, VGA, DVI and HDMI cables.


If you were playing a game with full visuals in Ultra settings then what would be the best cable to connect your video card to that type of monitor?

Back in the days, I would pick DVI for the better signals and picture quality. What would be the best option as of today?

Assuming they send the same image, any. But, HDMI tends to have the most caveats, so DP > DL-DVI-D > HDMI > SL-DVI-D, in general.

I am not a gamer so perhaps my monitor needs are less demanding than others but for brand names I have always had good luck with Samsung. my current monitor is a P2370 and suits my needs well although as stated I am not a gamer.

I would choose the Asus because the stand is adjustable in height as well as pivot. Asus is also, generally speaking, higher quality than Acer.

OP, have you considered a Dell monitor? The U2412HM is on sale now at Amazon:

You get a 1920 x 1200 IPS panel and a much better monitor IMO.
