Im stuck on the 1st level of SOF II

When John Mullins says "i need to get on that roof", how do i do that? i have been walking aroound the area with the metal boxes and crates forever. Am i supposed to somwhow get through the fences? What do i do?
 
Keep going....you can't get on the roof in that area. At the end of the maze of boxes is a door with a few baddies in it. Kill them and go upstairs. Jump off the balcony onto the roof section and continue forward and drop down. You will come to the front of the hotel and have to kill a buttload of guys. If you keep going from there you will find a fire escape on the other side of the hotel that you climb up. Follow the ledge along the front of the building.........
