I'm struck with the debate of a lifetime, need opinions...

It involves everything with my life, amazingly so. I will try to make this short, but how can I when it involves so much. I'm going to college. My girlfriend goes here too. She lives here and will be here for another ~2 years. My roomate wants me to do Plan A because it's the right thing to do. I'm stuck between A and B. A is the right thing to do and will take more time. B will get me out of college faster. Both will allow me to see my gf, but if I do B I'd be out of college faster and might not see her as much after.

Plan A:
My current schedule puts me at graduating in 3 semesters from now (I still have Fall 2004, Spring 2005, and Fall 2005). I'd take about 12 credits a semester. I would take a real internship between that Spring 2005 and Fall 2005 (the summer), which I have YET to get... and may never get.

Plan B:
However, I redid my classes / schedule and if I take 2 classes this summer (1 of which will be with my girlfriend as it's a political science class), 16 credits Fall 2004 and 15 in Spring 2005, I don't have to go to college that Fall 2005 (like Plan A) if I do this, however I would be kind of faking my internship by working for a company I already worked for. I would work there part time for Fall 2004/Spring 2005 instead of getting a real internship during Summer 2005 like Plan A. I could always take a real internship at a later date, such as that summer but I would already technically be graduated. Some companies only look for people for internships that are IN school, right? That's what I've been seeing.

That's the catch right there. Do you think it's wrong for me to go back to a previous employer, which they're allowing because I'm good friends with the boss, and have them almost "lie" saying I did things differently than to when I was there previously (Plan B)?

Example:

Worked at Company Name - 4 years as a Tech
Then worked at Company Name - 1 years Internship as an Assistant Systems Administrator, when in reality I worked there as an Assistant Systems Admin all of those years.

I mean, if I do this, I'll be able to graduate faster since I could take courses this summer (Plan B). I'm not sure if will look bad on a resume or not to have my internship be done with a company I've already technically worked for. I also would only have time under Plan B to only work there 1 day on the weekend, so it would be barely even part time. But technically it fulfulls the internship requirement.

I'm stuck and I don't know what to do. I want to graduate early, I want to do the right thing, and I want to see my girlfriend... I hate all these choices.

So you would be going back to the same job you had been doing as an intern? If the company is willing to call it an internship then I don't see a problem. Just my thoughts.

if you're set up financially and you're enjoying the life of a student, go ahead and linger in college for a while. There are no prizes for finishing any faster, at least not that I'm aware of.

15 credit hours?
::huff:: I did 23 my second semester (an no, I do not want a cookie)
:D

I would say to go with Plan B. Most of the jobs I looked for after I graduated didn't care much for what I did in my intership considering they were going to train me for what they needed. Good luck

edit: ...or go with Plan C. Finish early and do an excelerated Graduate program. That way you have more education, you get to stay in school longer, and you will get paid a bit more when you get out.

CliffNotes are possible:

A) Get a real internship that is required by his school.

B) Get an internship at a place he worked at in the past, which the school may not like. Graduation is one semester earlier if he chooses this option.

Anything else in your post is fluff. Easy answer (at least to me). Talk to the person at your school in charge of internships. Ask him/her if working in plan B will meet your school's requirements. If the answer is yes, choose B. If the answer is no, choose A and have him/her help you find an internship.

My question to you: do places near you give internships for just the summer? Around here that is nearly impossible to find as they want a 6 month committment (summer + one semester). Question 2: why can you not combine A and B for now? Take the extra class this summer regardless of plan A or B. Then you won't have to make up your mind for many more months to come. And I'd think it will be a lot easier to find internships later (who wants to hire someone 14 months before he/she starts working?)

Will your company structure your job to meet the requirements of an internship? If so, I don't see any problem. If not, don't lie. An internship is valuable experience, and you'd be hurting yourself to skip that. If that job already meets the internship requirements, good for you! Do it!

You said Plan A is the right thing to do. What else is there to say?

If I take the courses this summer and stay here, that will leave me going to school part time my last semester if I don't go through with the plan. I am signed up for Plan B right now but I can drop courses if I decide to go with Plan A.

I'm going to speak with my advisor in about 5 minutes from now and I'm going to ask him about the internship stuff. If I DO go with Plan B, the part time is only one day on the weekends, and will only be like 4 hours / week. Which is practically nothing. I'd feel guilty for calling it an internship, especially with a job other than what I'm doing.

Places do give internships near here, but it's too late to get one for this summer that I can see. I could look for a real one, but the MAIN thing is: I can't get a real full time internship and take the 2 classes this summer.

One is 4 weeks, but is 10am-1pm
The other is 6 weeks, same time of the summer + 2 weeks, but is 3:30pm-6:30pm

So it would take up most of the day for that month and a half, so I couldn't get a full time internship. However Saturdays would be open and I could work at my employer and call it a part time internship, if there isn't an hour requirement for "part time". I'm going to find that out now, it's almost 5 and I gotta see my advisor.

By the way, this old employer is 1 1/2 hours away from school so I'd have to drive there very Saturday out of the way, or any other day that I work...

Plan A is looking more appealing.

What is wrong with that?
